nonstop Posted December 23, 2016 Report Posted December 23, 2016 Hey guys, let me start with "I searched". Now, I have run into a little bit of a problem. My factory power steering system in my 1954 Royal calls for 10w non detergent oil. I bought a quart about a year ago, and went through it. I went to buy another quart recently and couldn't find it anywhere. Did some searching and found it is BANNED in California... I am so frustrated with California! Anyway, what are my options for my steering system since non detergent oil is out? Oh, and on a side note - I also learned WD-40 is sold as a California only version! Thanks for any help, Nick Quote
P15-D24 Posted December 23, 2016 Report Posted December 23, 2016 How about http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/compressor-oil/synthetic-compressor-oil-iso-68-sae-30/ Wrong weight, but is designed for pumps. The WD40 news is old news, they released a lower VOC version for CA years ago. Quote
captden29 Posted December 23, 2016 Report Posted December 23, 2016 I use dex3 in my powersteer pump for my 1954 Windsor . same in the powerflite. been using it for many years and no problems, system works great, no leaks. tractor supply sells it in a large container, maybe 2 gallon? my 97 merc uses it too. there is a guy who advertises 10W in the wpc magazine. capt den Quote
50 Dodge Lug Nut Posted December 23, 2016 Report Posted December 23, 2016 I've got 9 quarts of SAE 10 W non-detergent motor oil remaining fro a full case. Bought a carton of 12 qts few years ago for my Gyromatic trans. Used part of one quart, and kept the other two quarts "just in case" PM me if you're interested in what I've got. Frank Quote
nonstop Posted December 24, 2016 Author Report Posted December 24, 2016 (edited) Thanks guys! I think I will try the Dex3. I had tried it before with no adverse effects. I switched to 10w because that's what was called for and I assumed it would be better for the system. Any reason I shouldn't use Dex3? Do I need to flush the system? Should I try power steering fluid? I just can't/don't understand the rationale behind the ban. I had no clue about the WD40 issue! Edited December 24, 2016 by nonstop Quote
