Justin Slingsby Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 about half an hour into the drive this afternoon my transmission started to howl in first and second. Third gear was quiet. I take the car to a friends house that has a lift. Get the car in the air and sure enough it was REAL low on 90wt. I drove this thing howling mad for a half an hour. I stuck a magnet into the case. It had some filings on it but nothing extensive. Apon closer inspection it looks to be leaking from that seal between the trans and bellhousing. This is a seal I made when I installed a new ring gear on the car and rebuilt the clutch components. Soooo long story short where can I get this seal? Obviously the seal I made is no good. I checked Bernbaum and I can't find it.. Roberts has a trans seal kit but it has no description.. Quote
Lou Earle Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 I have not found a source- However I have made and installed 4 or 5 using gasket material from parts store. I used the firm material about the thickness of a Manila envelope or paper grocery bag. Seems to work. I put a thin coat of #2 gasket sealer around the output shaft area and around the edge. So far it has worked just fine and no leaks there Lou Quote
55 Fargo Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Justin, Bernbaum does have this gasket, it's under the trans gasket set, for around $14.95, have a look again at their website. I need to make on for mine also, Lou's advice sounds good to me, use a thin gasket material cut to size, install with gasket sealer, or buy the whole trans set from Bernbaums Quote
Young Ed Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Should be pretty easy to make your own. I made one for my car also. I believe some one hear has a pattern to fax over. I could certainly do something like that too. I still have my old one hanging on the wall. Quote
Justin Slingsby Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 Yeah I made my first one out of gasket paper but I must have messed something up. I think we'll go with the gasket set from Bernbaum as I am batting zero at the moment. As always thanks guys for your help. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Shel I did that. Replaced the top 2 bolts with alignment pins(I had the floor out -justin doesnt have that option) and slide it back on the pins. I didn't even remove the driveshaft. Quote
Lou Earle Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 Once I forgot to install gasket- We slit the TOP of the gasket and slid the trans out about 1/2 inch and slipped the gasket up onto the face. I slit the top because I never saw an oil or fluid leak go up mine always travel down Quote
blueskies Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 Shel I did that. Replaced the top 2 bolts with alignment pins(I had the floor out -justin doesnt have that option) and slide it back on the pins. I didn't even remove the driveshaft. I did this too. The guide pins in place of the bolts makes it easy. Pete Quote
