rearview Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Guys notice anything different? Another view Made a little deal with a fellow in this board. I cannot believe how the dual carbs woke up this motor. Ran it right up past 80 mph without a single hiccup. No headers, just single 2 1/4" pipe with turbo muffler... exhaust manifold opened up a little to help. Thanks REV!! Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Looks good. Do you still have room for the heater duct work? Quote
Normspeed Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 What carbs are those? Looks like it says "FURD" on the float bowl. Quote
rearview Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 WI Norm: Heater duct work won't fit. I'm going to have to create something new. don't know exactly what I want to make it out of... sheet metal, fiberglass, coated fiberboard...? CA Norm:Yup... they say Fjord on them. They're Holley 94's Quote
Lou Earle Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I noticed your filter system is a modern spin off- how do you like it? Any particular problems putting it in? which line is the in lina and whic is the return? Lou ps I f you r having problems withthe hearer duct I can solve that - just send me the air breathers- LOL Quote
rearview Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 The spin off filter is nice. Install was fairly straight forward, had to make the black mounting block and plumb it. The car had no filter when I got it and that bothered me. I found this on ebay, actually made for a Harley and using a standard Ford filter. The oil plumbing directions I found on this site and pipe it up accordingly. All in all a very simple job. A bit more info on the filter kit in an old thread of mine: http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=2418&highlight=filter BTW... duct still doesn't fit when the air cleaners are off. I'd have to send you both carbs also. I really need to detail that engine compartment this winter. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 You should be able to come up with something for the heater ducts. Then just use the two original ends off the old one for mounting. Like those air cleaners. If you want to make them look like new, bring them up sometime. We'll go out in the garage and put them on the buffer with a little buffing compound. Make them really stand out. Quote
rearview Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 You're right, duct should be easy... but it's hotter than stink outside so I probably won't get to it until the week before the Hunnert Car Pileup. I actually was going to polish the intake and the air cleaners, but when I was mocking it up, I thought it would look like an "add on" if they were all shiney and everything else was grubby. So I went for the classic speed look of light patina. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I'm with you on the heat. My new headliner is just hanging in the car right now. Too hot to go out there and finish putting it in. Supposed to drop back in the 70's tomorrow though through the weekend, so maybe I can finish it then. Looking back over the years I've owned the car, seems like I did the most work on it in the fall and spring of each year. Guess there was a reason for that. Quote
rearview Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 Honestly, when this thing fired up last Thursday and ran like a top it was the happiest I have been in a long time. Between personal issues, work, etc. going out into the garage a couple times per week has been my only refuge. Getting in then on Saturday and ripping it around the block (it was a BIG block) gave me a sense of accomplishment that has been missing lately. Sometimes it's the simplest things..... Plan is to go to Cheaterama with some friends from the Hoodlums CC on July 14 at the Nite Owl 830 E. Layton Ave. Milwaukee. License plates? We don't need no steenkin plates!! Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Who picked the Nite Owl? Had to go looking to see what the Hoodlums were. Don't get around much on the web. Quote
rearview Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 The Hoodlums are a small bunch of guys from the Waterford area. I guess the Cheaters have used the Nite Owl for a few years now. One of those "come early" shows Quote
Justin Slingsby Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Great it is July 14th this year! I hadn't heard a date yet. That is a great show. It was my very first show that I ever sold T-shirts at. Just as rearview said they have been using the Night Owl since the show started back in 2001??? er so... Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 You guys do know that the NSRA Milwaukee show is that weekend. The host hotel is by the airport too, or at least it was last year. Going to be busy that weekend. Milwaukee Nationals July 13th, 14th, & 15th, 2007 Wisconsin State Fair Park West Allis, Wisconsin http://www.nsra-usa.com/annual.htm Quote
48mirage Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 My old heater duct was geeting pretty weak. I took it down to the local sheetmetal (HVAC ductwork) shop. They weren't comfortable with the offsets required to copy it but we did come up with the idea of 2 square to 4" rounds. I can install these square to round transition pieces then use dryer hose or defroster hose to route between the transitions. Quote
Reg Evans Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Bob, Glad that setup worked out well for you. Did you have to rebuild the 94's? Where did you find the air cleaners? I guess I'd better get busy and install the 2bbl I got from you. Quote
rearview Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 I had to crack the top off the rear carb because there was a piece of schmutz stuck in the seat. Blew that out of there and put it back together and they worked fine... no leaks, good fine pattern from the venturis, and no vacuum leaks from the throttle shafts. If they do leak I'll mill a groove in them and put in an o-ring. Replaced the copper connecting lines with steel and a little teflon tape here and there. Thanks a bunch!! I stumbled across the air cleaners on ebay mis-listed as for "dual quads". They are O'brien Trucker's air cleaners in like new shape, except for a little patina... Got them for $50 plus shipping. I love the buy-it-now button on stuff like that. Quote
blueskies Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 WI Norm: Heater duct work won't fit. I'm going to have to create something new. don't know exactly what I want to make it out of... sheet metal, fiberglass, coated fiberboard...? Rearview- I used my factory duct, just did a bit of scribe and patchwork to make it fit around my dual carb and air cleaner setup. My duct was original to the car and was really nasty. The surface of the duct was eroding and it stunk. I used a stiff wire brush to brush the surface of the duct, and found that all the loose nasty stuff brushed off to leave a smooth hard cardboard underneath. I brushed the whole thing inside and out, and it looked like new. Once I had it cleaned up, I used a sharp utility knife and scribed a hunk of the duct off to fit around the air cleaner cover, and then fitted a new piece of cardboard from a thick shoe box to fill the hole. I used two part epoxy to glue the filler in place. Once the glue was dry, I painted the whole thing inside and out with POR-15 paint. The sealed it up and got rid of the smelly-ness it had before. The new shape of the duct does not seem to make a noticable difference in the air flow from the heater, it works great. Pete Quote
rearview Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 My old heater duct was getting pretty weak, so replacement was in order already. Plus I made the mistake of leaning my elbow on it when rebuilding the stock carb. I ended up taking it off in pieces. I am picking up another 52 Wayfarer for parts next weekend and it has a good duct. I will probably try to do a little work just like blueskies. If that won't work, then maybe the square to 4" round might work. The Cheaters choose the same weekend as the roadster show on purpose, gives folks more stuff to do. Bad news is it is also the Iola weekend. Looks like I'm missing Iola. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 another good use for the "offals" Don was talking about. Quote
rearview Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 another good use for the "offals" Don was talking about. Ok... I'll bite..... HUH? Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Bob, I gave up on Iola two years ago. Just too much walking up and down those hills and it's usually close to 100 degrees out (at least it feels that way). That's a long hike for me up there. About 250 to 300 miles round trip. Would have to tack at least another 100 miles for you. That's a lot of driving and walking in one day. Use to leave the house about 4 AM so we could be there by 6 AM or a little after. Then we would leave about 3 or 3:30 PM, get home, clean up, take our wives to dinner, then down to the Fireworks on the lakefront. Didn't get home to rest until around 11 PM or so. Getting too old for that kind of nonsense. Quote
rearview Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 I've got a little chunk of property up near Steven's point that I could use as a rest stop, so it wouldn't be so bad... but Cheaterama is the same day, so it doesn't matter Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Actually, I think the Jefferson meet is almost as good as Iola anyway. The only difference is there are more of the big name people at Iola, like Coker Tire and Steele Rubber. That's probably because they also advertise in Old Cars Weekly. The Iola meet was originally started back in the early 70's by the original owner of Old Cars Weekly (Krause Publications). He was a serious collector too. The meet is held right on their grounds. I didn't even go to Jefferson this year, just Waukesha. Don't need anything anymore that I can't get out of a catalog or parts store, so don't need to hit the swaps like I use to. I'd just end up buying some useless piece of junk to create more clutter if I went. Quote
