I took mine to my local mechanic. He replaced the end bushing where the armature sets. It worked a lot better after that. If that bushing is worn, it will cause the armature to rub against the magnets slowing or stopping the starter.

I had a similar problem with my '55 starter after I stripped and cleaned it. Dont know if your Bendix is the same, but my gear can slide onto the splines 3 different ways and only one works, with the others the starter just spins and the gear doesnt engage.

I hooked it up to power correctly this time, now it spins great, but not when installed.... is there maybe an engine ground other than the battery that I could clean up? it should be getting power with the new solenoid, just maybe not grounded correctly?

ordering correct gauge wiring from andy bernbaum, hopefully will do the trick
