Jeepnjay Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 I've got a fellow Plymouth guy who needs to replace a hacked frame under his 47 coupe. He found a 49 coupe with a decent frame, will they interchange? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) only if it is a first series 49...P18 designator is a no-go first series is still a P15..actual P18 production was months late in starting up... Edited March 22, 2015 by Plymouthy Adams Quote
Jeepnjay Posted March 22, 2015 Author Report Posted March 22, 2015 That's what I thought, but wanted to make sure. He got the radiator and support and those fit but it's not a first series. Quote
wayfarer Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 How bad is the 'hacked' frame ? What is the worst area and what was done? Quote
Jeepnjay Posted March 23, 2015 Author Report Posted March 23, 2015 Previous owner horribly grafted an Oldsmobile ifs front clip, he wants it back original. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 cut out the GM junk and go with a better Mopar clip..even the center line of the frame is still the same as the original frame when fitted... Quote
wayfarer Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 Yup, no need to change the entire frame unless he is a complete granny and won't abide by a modified frame. Remove the gm junk and put an original clip back on....my choice would be to look at a Gen I Dakota. Quote
mlozier76 Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 I was talking to a retired salvage yard guy yesterday, and he told me that some of the late 70's Chrysler Cordoba front clips are a boltup for the Dodge D24, don't know if it would be interchangeable with the Plymouth. He had a couple there, but didn't have a chance to look at the specs vs the 3 D24s he had in the yard. I may take a look at them when I go up in a month or so to pull my inner fender and engine that I reserved with him. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 (edited) your local junkyard guy has probably sold one or two of these front clips for that purpose..but that is where his experience ends...they are not near a bolt in for the D24 unless you consider changing the forward frame rails as common...to that end a better Mopar clip is available....the cutting and boxing of the spring pockets if you choose that route makes it quite the involved process....even retrofitted to trucks be they Dodge or Ford..both pretty popular..most still have to notch the receiver frame so to set the porper caster needed for good tracking and prevention of road wandering...both series will follow the original frame centerline of the P15/D24 if you do your cuts proper...the forward mounts for the body are the only items you have to swap..and again..the centerline will allow that to sit perfect if you follow the frame book in setting it all up I find early Gen Daks very nice for 49 and later...and the later 1997-2006 frames a better clip for the P15's...albeit the 6 bolt lug pattern is a clinker...that is a tad to change and with my 2004 Dak graft, the huge rear and front brakes you get are well worth it in my opinion..each person has to weigh their own ideas, pictured build and bank roll..
