RobertKB Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 I am 95% sure of the correct answer but I am also a believer in the motto "It is better to ask a stupid question than to make a stupid mistake". I am ready to install the inner seals for the rear axles on my '51Dodge project. Differential is in and bolted down. What I want to know is which way round these seals should go as they have to go in before the axles can be placed. Imagine looking at the end of the axle housing, which way should these seals be put in? Should the side with the numbers be showing (Picture 1) or the reverse side (Picture 2)? Thanks for any help. Merle Coggins Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 The seal lip goes towards the oil, so the inner seal keeps the axle oil in the axle housing and the outer seal keeps the outer axle bearing in the bearing. Quote
