MartinsB3B Posted January 15, 2015 Report Posted January 15, 2015 Thought I'd post this here; My log cabin project. Been going on since Spring of 2010, still going on. I hope to have it finished sometime this coming year. I used all handtools other than cutting the doors out which was a lot easier than a crosscut...which I have used cutting the logs to size. It is a 220 sq. foot one room cabin with a half loft, two porches and small wood stove. All cedar logs were fell on our farm, and the floor boards are sawn up from some of them. I made my own doors out of barn lumber and used the same lumber for the porch floors. My buddy and I got the tin put on in one day, and no leaks. All that I have left is windows in the loft, finish my stove pipe, get my lock on the porch door, insulate the rafters, put planks on the gable ends, and chink. With all hope I'd like to finish it this year. cabinporchdoor.htm 5 Quote
RobertKB Posted January 15, 2015 Report Posted January 15, 2015 Very interesting project. It will be cozy even in the winter with a wood stove! Quote
Larry Leibhart Posted January 15, 2015 Report Posted January 15, 2015 Looks secluded. How far from your nearest neighbor? Pretty country. Quote
MartinsB3B Posted January 15, 2015 Author Report Posted January 15, 2015 I can see my neighbors rooftop that lives on my road, from my cabin I can see a single wide across the holler on another road probably 6-7 hundred yards away. Best thing about Ky, seclusion! Have a nice game trail pic of a 12pt buck at the creek below my cabin. Quote
Mark D Posted January 15, 2015 Report Posted January 15, 2015 Awesome work man! Love the natural logs. One of my favorite pastimes is working on the two cabins I have. Our place in northern Maine is off the grid, on 100 acres of family land, it is a replacement with small enhancements for one that my wife's grandparents built in 1962. We have no intention of installing electricity, and the fun part is developing alternative devices/methods to make living easier up there. Last summer I added a Wood fired sauna to the place on Maine, this summer we'll replace the outhouse with something a bit more updated. The other cabin we own (the red one) is 10 miles from home here in central Massachusetts and will be our future Summerplace when we take official residency in North Carolina in about eight years, for the winters. I started this one in 2004, and I've added a porch in the lake side this year, and am currently working on a bathroom addition. This place has water and electric, but only from April thru november. Even still, I carry water in with me in winter and spend lots of time there by my lonesome stoking the stove and puttering on projects. 1 Quote
MartinsB3B Posted January 15, 2015 Author Report Posted January 15, 2015 That's a pretty place you've got. I plan on putting solar panels on my porch roof where it's south facing, have just a few lights and maybe an outlet. Quote
Mark D Posted January 15, 2015 Report Posted January 15, 2015 I've given solar a thought, but probably just a small system. My place is four hours from home, so I worry about what gets left out for "visitors." I've got my eye on one of those large IBC containers, with an idea to build a rain water harvester for up there. Run it all from a solar 12v pump. Quote
MartinsB3B Posted January 16, 2015 Author Report Posted January 16, 2015 My cabin is actually a five minute walk from home, both doors have locks and no windows on bottom floor. There's only one road in and out so break-ins are very low here. Not to say it couldn't happen. Quote
