Joe Flanagan Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Last weekend I was crawling around under my Plymouth checking on some things and I noticed that there is something loose inside the muffler. When I hit it with my hand, there is a tinny, rattling sound, like there's lots of small metallic objects inside it. My guess is it's rusted inside. It works, the exhaust is quiet, etc., but I was wondering if this might cause problems. Can it contribute to a restricted exhaust or have any other negative effect? Quote
pflaming Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Those are singing 'gremlins', all of which are baritones and when then start to sing then that nice low mellow sound is heard. They are close relatives to Johnny Cash! Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted November 14, 2014 Author Report Posted November 14, 2014 I can't wait till that happens. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 I would guess some of your baffles are more like Corn flakes or maybe rice crispies, even though no snap, crackle or pop. 1 Quote
Ulu Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Rusty muffler syndrome. They can look fine on the outside and be crumbling on the inside. One day a whole baffle tube will let go and you'll think the tailpipe just fell off the car when the noise level jumps up. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted November 14, 2014 Author Report Posted November 14, 2014 (edited) I'm wondering if this could cause the rough idle condition I've got or somehow imitate the symptoms of a sticking exhaust valve, like if there were a restriction and I was getting some back pressure. Ulu Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 You can unbolt the muffler completely to test this, if you think it's clogging up. That can and does happen. Quote
