Captain Neon Posted September 27, 2014 Report Posted September 27, 2014 I've recently purchased a '98 Dakota with a 4 cylinder engine. PO ran it without a fan, and so far has been keeping cool. I replaced the old radiator when I noticed a leak flushing the cooling system and installed an universal fan. The fan is not currently wired up. I'm trying to figure out how I can power the fan without running the battery down after shutting down the engine. I'd rather not try to fish a wire into the cab and install a switch. I am wondering if there is a place in the fuse box that I can run a wire that powers off when the engine is shut off, or where the original fan relay is located. Pictures would be great. Quote
TodFitch Posted September 27, 2014 Report Posted September 27, 2014 Sounds like getting a copy of the service manual would be a good thing for you to do. My limited experience with vehicles that came from the factory with electrical fans is that they are controlled by relays and the relays are controlled by temperature sensors. The relays may, or may not, be supplied with power when the switch is off depending on year, make and model. The service manual will have wiring diagrams that show where those relays are located and how they are wired. If that vehicle did not come with an electrical fan, then the service manual will show how it is wired and give you a clue where to tap in to the system. So getting a service manual is the first step. Quote
