ROB-PA Posted September 8, 2014 Author Report Posted September 8, 2014 Well, I finally got the 35 Plymouth to my house. I have attached pictures of the front and rear engine frame mounts. Quite a bit different from the truck. bbbbbb99, I don't suppose that you also have a bell housing for that 36? Quote
bbbbbb99 Posted September 8, 2014 Report Posted September 8, 2014 Yeah, those look like the frame mounts I have. Should work with the one I have that bolts to the engine. I have a bellhousing for a 1953 218 but I was going to keep it for a project. Why don't you PM me? Quote
DJ194950 Posted September 8, 2014 Report Posted September 8, 2014 Your pic that had the original tranny in it- appears if you want to use it the shifter overhangs the bell housing. It requires a early bell to match that overhang. I have one I'm not using But the cast part # search shows it was for 37-38 car and truck? Has the bell flat for the shifter overhand, but I'm also in CA! Enjoy the adventure, don't make work out of it! DJ Quote
ROB-PA Posted September 9, 2014 Author Report Posted September 9, 2014 DJ194950, Not sure what it would cost to ship. Any chance I can see a picture of it? Quote
DJ194950 Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 Maybe I can get a pic. of it tomorrow as it's in a shipping container at my friends ranch. I plan to go there tomorrow any way, so I'll let you know and try to weight it too! DJ Quote
ROB-PA Posted September 9, 2014 Author Report Posted September 9, 2014 Thanks DJ. I'd if possible, appreciate it. Quote
Robert Horne Posted September 10, 2014 Report Posted September 10, 2014 Here is a photo of my 38 bell housing, with my TK5 Ford Ranger trans attached, on the back of my 56 engine....... Quote
Robert Horne Posted September 10, 2014 Report Posted September 10, 2014 (edited) here is a photo of a 37 I believe. the trans cross member trans mount, looks different than my 38s. the engine mounts look the same as my 38s.. Edited September 10, 2014 by Robert Horne Quote
ROB-PA Posted September 10, 2014 Author Report Posted September 10, 2014 Robert, thanks for the pictures. I'm curious about the T5 conversion. In the website they referred to changing the release bearing out for some Jeep version and having to modify the sleeve. I think from the looks of your picture that the transmission is considerably longer and would require a drive shaft mod or change out. If that is the correct position for the shifter it would most likely be in the middle of my seat. The shifter in the 35 sits right above that flat on the top rear of the bell housing. Could you shed some light on how much you had to modify to make this conversion? The drivability benefits sound great but I don't want to get into a massive project at this time and I want the car to appear as original as possible. On the plus side the bell housing for the 38 appears to be the same as what I need for the 35. Quote
Robert Horne Posted September 10, 2014 Report Posted September 10, 2014 On the T5, Don Coatney had an excellent thread on his install of a speed T5. On my TK5 Ranger 5 speed, check out my thread, 5speed,Not T5...... I bent the Ranger shifter a little forward, and then to the rear, working good... I used a Ranger clutch disc, Dodge/Plymouth pressure plate and throwout bearing, Explorer Sport 2wd driveshaft, Ranger rearend. Quote
ROB-PA Posted September 10, 2014 Author Report Posted September 10, 2014 Thanks for the pictures and the clarification Robert. I didn't notice that it was a TK5 that you had installed. I was looking at the S10 T5 as someone had mentioned that to me. That looks like it worked out pretty well for you. How does it cruise with the 5 speed? I'll look up the thread that you mentioned. DJ194950 Posted September 10, 2014 Report Posted September 10, 2014 (edited) Pics of the bell housing take today in the container that was mentioned in my earlier posts. Forgot it still had the mounts and throwout bearing and collar with greasing line still attached. Forgot to mention weight. Approx. 35 lbs. per bathroom scale, close per previous use but not an exact #. Edited to add weight. Hope of some help. DJ Edited September 10, 2014 by DJ194950 Quote
ROB-PA Posted September 11, 2014 Author Report Posted September 11, 2014 Thanks DJ, that appears to be what I am looking for. I'll go out tomorrow and compare the pictures of the mounts shown there with the mounts that are still on my Plymouth; first glance they look the same. Now the question is, do you want to sell it and if so what are we talking about? PM me to discuss if you want. I would like to use the original transmission if I can. Of course I still don't know what condition it is in. If it turns out to be in bad shape I could still use the bell housing and do the T5 conversion that was discussed above. With the condition that I have found the rest of the car to be in I expect the transmission to be okay. Quote
DJ194950 Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Pull the top cover and drain the oil, will give lots of info on condition. Had the tranny also but shared that with a friend with a 37 4 dr. driver that had a somewhat noisy trans. It worked as it was after a good cleaning out. Bell housing would be for sale to a forum member reasonably priced but shipping will most likely be more. Anyone closer? DJ Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 (edited) Doug and Rob , The shipping might not be too much on that bell housing . I shipped a differential to the east coast from California and it was very reasonable , ship it USPS using basic shipping . It has been a few years so I don't remember the exact cost but I think it was around $ 50 for that heavy item . USPS has a page on their site where you put in the weight and size and it gives you the shipping cost . Edited September 11, 2014 by Jerry Roberts Quote
ROB-PA Posted September 11, 2014 Author Report Posted September 11, 2014 I'll be checking out the gearbox this weekend. I'll check with French Lake tomorrow. I know that they have a 35; I already asked them about a front plate. Unfortunately I didn't know then that I needed the bell housing. Now I know (I think) that I can use up to 38 so that should make it easier. Quote
DonaldSmith Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Look into shipping via Greyhound. I shipped out a dashboard once, very bulky, but no problem. As I remember it was not expensive, but it goes Greyhound station to Greyhound station. No home delivery. Quote
ROB-PA Posted September 11, 2014 Author Report Posted September 11, 2014 Well DJ, I checked with French Lake and 2 other more local yards that have vintage vehicles; no luck. Maybe we need to look into what we can do for shipping from California. Quote
DJ194950 Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 will PM my zip code so you can check options for shipping. A while back I shipped 2 rear end 3rd. members and FedEx was best. Years past Greyhound was great, not so much anymore. DJ Quote
