Conroe Powdercoating Posted July 19, 2014 Report Posted July 19, 2014 51 cranbrook, my rear shackles were cut and extended with flat plate on each side and I want to replace them. Anybody have a set they want to part with ? how do they come apart, I'm guessing all the bumper brackets get removed and the bolt slides out that direction instead of towards the tank? thanks Timothy Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 19, 2014 Report Posted July 19, 2014 (edited) shackles have stationery (welded pins) on one bar with the diameter of the pin a bit larger diameter than the cover bar as the shoulder of the bolt sets the distance and the load/clamping of the bushings is set by the smaller threaded section. it is not that hard to make your own shackles if push came to shove by be very length of the thread being your stop or even using a 3/8 bolt with a 1/2 sleeve to establish this fixed width...if you remove your old one you will see how and why of the build principle and allow you to duplicate if needed. E-bay often has these shackles but it seems they going higher and higher in price. Don Coatney made his own if I recall, I have made these myself and even have made them in offset configuration for special application. Bushing are available through Advance auto Moog parts line at a fair price...Poly is available also for A-body that will easily do the job also.. and yes..often more than not the bumper bracket is removed as they overlay the shackle with their pre-bent bumper mounts..rarely will the front spring eye (silent block) need replaced...these seem to do an excellent job some 60 years later.. dlrides Posted July 19, 2014 Report Posted July 19, 2014 Bernbaum has the complete assembly for a reasonable price. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 19, 2014 Report Posted July 19, 2014 I did make my shackles. I made them a bit longer than standard as I wanted a slightly higher ride height. Quote
