Tony_Urwin Posted June 9, 2007 Report Posted June 9, 2007 My truck is missing the clamp that secures the bottom of the steering jacket to the steering box. I am using a hose clamp as a temporary fix. Does anyone have an extra that they could sell me? Quote
Ken_Hart Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Tony let me take a look at my column and see if I still have it.. If I do, its yours... If I can figure out how to get it appart Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Of interest while giving my car a pre flight for the Tulsa run I found both bolts holding the steering jacket clamp loose. One was very loose and ready to fall out. All is secure now. Quote
Tony_Urwin Posted June 13, 2007 Author Report Posted June 13, 2007 You have to pull the steering wheel, remove the three bolts that secure the steering box to thte frame, and then the sleeve and clamp will slide up and out the door. That's really going above and beyond, and I would be happy to pay you for it. Quote
Ken_Hart Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 Did a quick look (will do better this weekend) but it looks like the column in my 48 does not have that part.. Its has a clamp around the base of the column (where it connects to the box) .... but the pic you posted is kinda small on my computer.. Maybe I am not looking in the right area. My steering box is a 'GEMMER' brand unit incase that makes a difference Did only certain years have that style set up? Quote
Tony_Urwin Posted June 15, 2007 Author Report Posted June 15, 2007 I think it is correct for all but the very big trucks. Here's a better picture. I'm also working on the other end of the column; Hhen I pulled the sleeve, the bearing at the top fell apart. I took the bearing shell to a bearing distributor, but they couldn't match the size. So I bought digital calipers on eBay to measure the size and will continue the hunt for a replacement bearing. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 I could possibly pull the complete unit from my parts truck and sell it to you if you can't find a bearing. It would come complete with the clamp you seek. Quote
Ken_Hart Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 The second pic looks like my set up.. Does the steering box come apart from the steering shaft. If so, let me know how and I will try . You can have the whole assembly (or just the box) if you want to pay for shipping, I will not be using it... Now that I know we have the same set up, I can try next weekend to pull the clamp off (and what ever other parts you want off of it).. going to be out of town for business most of this week Ken Quote
Tony_Urwin Posted June 18, 2007 Author Report Posted June 18, 2007 Ken or Merle, I definitely need the clamp. If I cannot find a bearing of the correct size, I think I will need the column sleeve also. It seems unlikely that the bearing can be removed from the sleeve without trashing it. Quote
Ken_Hart Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 Tony, I have the clamp off.. and most of the steering box apart. the bearings in mine look pretty good, spin nice Will send you a PM to get your address Ken Quote
Tony_Urwin Posted June 24, 2007 Author Report Posted June 24, 2007 Thanks so much, Ken! I think my box is OK (the truck came with an extra) just need the steering tube from clamp to bearing. Quote
Ken_Hart Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 Tony, got your note and sent a reply. I am letting it drain now and will mail out what you need on Tuesday (see my PM) Quote
