Labrauer Posted March 7, 2014 Report Posted March 7, 2014 OK guys here are a couple of pics of the pinion flange that I took off the 48 Plymouth Coupe to replace the seal and found this. I don't know if the pinion flange nut that was holding the flange on was to correct torque or not but with the two burs in the spline I don't see how it would have gone on all the way. When taking the flange off I turned the back wheel and sounded like the pinion bearing wasn't all the way against the flange housing. There is a washer on the front of the bearing that was between the bearing and the pinion gear. In the service manual book that I have it shows no washer in that position (#15-16). It does show bearing adjustment shims between bearing spacer and bearing #17. Does the pinion bearing ride against the pinion flange to hold the bearing in the bearing race? Anybody have any recommendations on how to fix the problem or is it a problem at all? Thanks in advance for all the feedback. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 7, 2014 Report Posted March 7, 2014 (edited) the only reason I can think of for a washer in the position you found one is the fact the PO wanted to shift the flange a bit forward to allow for the seal to ride on an unworn section...theoretically if your pinion has been set up right this will have no adverse effect on the rear end..as the shims for the pinion and the bearings are deeper within the unit... inspect your pinion flange for a groove...if cut, fit with speedi-sleeve of appropriate dimension, remove the washer, deburr the splines on the flange and reinstall.. you cannot properly check any part of the axle by rotation with the preload off the pinion...
