Barry Maxwell Posted January 24, 2014 Author Report Posted January 24, 2014 Question, in my trying to understand how the spring/diaphram work, it appears to Me that they would be under the screwed on top? cap that has to vent hole in it? If so, replacing the diaphram/spring set up with just a single gasket would leak fuel or suck air if just a outer gasket is made or if a gasket the fill the void completely simularly as the diaphram does now that it could still flex up and down with fuel suction or pressure depending how the worksbecause of the raised area ?? If i'm totally lost on this please let me know! Not a problem. Doug DJ194950: Replacing the diaphragm/spring with a suitable gasket material will subject it to pressure pulses from the pump, and I suppose it could rupture if the pressure is high enough. I tend to think (guess) that the fuel will simply go into the carb with more gusto. I could minimize the possibility of rupture by filling the vent hole with a screw of JB Weld. I suppose another option would be to fab a thin alum. plate instead of some gasket material, but that would be harder to fabricate. You might be able to tell that I am flying blind on this, but it wouldn't be the first or last time. Your thoughts are appreciated. Barry Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted January 24, 2014 Report Posted January 24, 2014 Barry; It seems like these pre-carb type filters were maybe an option or were added after the fact. There were many company's producing this stuff. My truck had one made by "The Alloy MFG. Co." and it had a ceramic element. I think they were a very popular after market item and probably for good reason. I have had enough problems with dirt, etc...in the fuel systems of various vehicles I have owned that these days I want as much filtration as I can get. You might find something vintage with a decent element . Jeff Quote

Plus the other to plug to hole also. I think the steel or alum. plate are fine but probably need gaskets on both sides of the plate to stop leaks. I did not want to mention a possible remedy if I was not unerstanding how the filter worked. Wonder if this was an attemp to sell a add on to increase fuel milage. Huckerisms are not new. The idea of pulsated fuel pressure MAY force the fuel past the float seat of the carb. increasing wasted fuel! Best, Doug Quote
