I have the tranny in neutral but the reverse slot or the slider gear won't slide on. The forks were moved so now trying to get them back right has proven to be a real challenge. It is a 1952 Syncro 4 speed Truck Tranny. Somebody else has surely had fun with this before me.

Is the lid in neutral? You should be able to measure between the forks and the between the sliders and compare to get them aligned. Comparative measurements between the forks and lid bolts, sliders and trans bolt holes may help.

Jerry;

I had to deal with this same problem not too long ago. :( My truck is a fluid drive 4 speed w synchromesh. This model is a real bugger as the access through the floor is restricted at the rear and does not allow you to drop the shifter straight in. Hopefully you don't have a fluid drive.

It took me several attempts to get it to drop in correctly. You are going to have to be very patient.

The best advice I can give you is to make certain that the shifter mechanism is truly in neutral and then move selector rings in the tranny to match up with the forks. I know this might sound lame but when everything is just so.....it will drop right in.

I carefully figured out the roll of the tranny so I am pretty sure its in neutral...Spline rolls free with clutch engaged. The span between my forks is in line with the collars in the tranny. Now the wrinkle...The slot for the slider is to far back and it doesn't come up in line in neutral with the lid.

I am going to go at it again here and carefully measure from the bolt holes which I haven't done... I have eye balling it..The funny part is before I had to take the lid off to peek everything was fine...I bought this tranny our of Minnesota and it's new to me so I had to know what the innerds were looking like. Thankfully it all looks really good. I just cant believe it has been this tricky getting the lid back in place. No it's not a fluid drive but it's a pain playing with that lid in limited space.

Keven says I have to have this done by spring for the BBQ...

We have 2 new guys doing trucks here in southern Oregon...I met one and got him hooked up with some stuff and another just signed in here and I am calling him today...Kevens been talking to him so I am sure he is squared away...Or at least getting there. I have to go see this truck.

Thanks for the helpful insight...Fresh mind this morning....Hopefully a loaded topside.

Hang in there ..... you will get it to go in. :)

I don't know all the correct terminology....but getting the two main forks lined up should not be too hard.......if it is ....the detents on the shifter mechanism rods are holding the forks from sliding into the correct position. I have a huge wood lined vise in my shop. I used it to hold the shifter upside down and see how everything worked together. This helped me a lot.......the detents on the slider rods can work into a position that will not allow you to get the range of movement needed to get the forks to go into place. There is a third item which I will call a "toggle" that is related to reverse gear. The two forks and this "toggle" all have to drop into their respective homes in order for this to work.

I hope this makes some sense. It is a difficult thing to try and explain without the parts in question might in front of you.

Even pictures are not much help as the detents are not clearly visible.
