arado Posted November 20, 2013 Report Posted November 20, 2013 I installed the exhaust system in my 48 Plymouth resurrection yesterday. I mig welded all joints except manifold to header. It should be quiet and trouble free. I suspended it on rubber hangars as original...I am building a driver........ next is to remove rear drums to replace cylinders for Dot 5 conversion... I have a big hammer.... this 60 year old car is fun.... Quote
RobertKB Posted November 20, 2013 Report Posted November 20, 2013 Yes, they are fun and sounds like you are enjoying it. That's what the hobby is about. Before converting to DOT 5 search for the threads on this site about the topic. Lots of pros and cons for both DOT 5 and DOT3. Quote
desoto1939 Posted November 20, 2013 Report Posted November 20, 2013 when using dot 5 you will need to rebuild each brake cyclinder with new rubber components, new brake hoses and also the master cylinder will also need to be rebuilt with new rubber components. You will need to flush out all the lines with denatured alcohol to clear the metal brake lines of the old dot 3 brake fluid. Also check all the metal brake lines and replace any or all to start fresh lines. I have had dot 5 in my 39 desoto since 1988. rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com 1 Quote
Chuck51631 Posted November 20, 2013 Report Posted November 20, 2013 Desoto 1939 said it all. I also changed from DOT3 to DOT5. Never had a problem since. When using DOT3, I was constantly replacing wheel cylinders due to corrosion and rust. I did convert to a dual master cylinder and replaced all of the metal brake lines at the same time. Mainly for safety reasons. I figured 50 year old parts are nothing to play with when you have a car that can't be replaced. 1 Quote
meadowbrook Posted November 20, 2013 Report Posted November 20, 2013 I just bleed my brakes every couple of years and use DOT3 or 4. Quote
arado Posted November 20, 2013 Author Report Posted November 20, 2013 I have used Dot 5 since 1978. I used it in my 1973 Norton. It is still as sweet as the day I did it. I use it in my 2005 Chrysler Crossfire and all my hydraulics. Quote

It took a 3 leg puller, 8 # sledge hammer and a torch.. brake linings are unworn.....It gets new cylinders, clean up, paint, then Dot5 Quote
