Mark Haymond
These horns have to draw a lot of power through the wires. If the circuit path from the battery, through the relay (you have a new one), and to the horn connection is not good the horns may not work. You may not even get a weak sound, they may just stay silent until they get enough juice. Happened to me. Try running a jumper cable or other suitable wire straight from the battery to the horn connection to test this theory. It is a quick test, it will tell you if the horns are getting enough current. doctor dirt
Not sure how that listings help, are their parts numbers for the contacts? I need the contact screws and have talked to two fellows who recondition horns and they said their not available. Tonite I'm taking the coupe to a friend who is a metal fabricator and engineer who wants to see the screws (points) to see if he can reproduce them. We'll also double check how efficient the new relay is recheck the transfer board near the radiator to see if the contacts there are clean. Doc. _shel_ny
That listing shows that the vehicle had 2 horns What you have may, or may not be the original, but it appears that most all the MoPars of that vintage had a Hi. note, and a Low note horn. doctor dirt
The D29 shows 1 horn in the manual that's why I question if the juice flow was enough for two. It is enough however the points are worn down. My friend who is an engineer and fabricator cleaned them and made up a paste and spread it on them then filed the piece they screw into. They work but they also seem to loose their adjustment once the caps (covers) are replaced over them. Right now I'll try to get more info about replacing the contacts but in the mean time they work. Next week he will pull the wiper box out and we'll see how badly it needs to be greased. Hopefully I can get the vacs working well enough to do a decent job. If not I'll need an electric motor and converter and if I have to I'll mount a second battery in the trunk or opposite the stock placement. The horns and wipers are the last projects left that I knew where problems when I first got this car. Relying on others is the worst experience of my life! I can't find a wrench in my area that's willing to work on the car, one kid who benefited from me sending customers his way for years told me he doesn't want to work on cars older than himself. Times sure have changed, to much rush and far much fus for me. If anyone knows of a horn refinishing buss. drop a line. Thanks again gang have a great weekend. _shel_ny
Looks like your D39 is the exception to the 2 horn deal If the wire is heavy enough (12ga or thicker) two horns should get enough juice.
doctor dirt
Thanks Mark that's what we did first, the D29 in my manual shows a car with one horn trumpet that's why I thought it was added during restoration. The entire radiator support and boxing are like new so I even checked where it was grounded to see if it was on paint material and not getting a proper ground. It was ok. We have them working together for now but I'll need the points or down the road I will need a different system. That being said can anyone suggest a wiper motor set up that could be converted to my 6 volt set up? The manny vac system is a pain in the butt so a newer piece + converter is in order. In Florida you can drive into a rain storm in a second, it rains on the other side of the street here all the time. Any suggestions what to buy and where to buy? thanks Doc. Don Coatney
Not sure about converting to electric wipers but you might consider adding a vacuum reservoir. This does not completely eliminate the pause under acceleration but greatly reduces it. With this pictured reservoir I get 4-5 swipes after I shut the engine off. doctor dirt
That is something to consider right now I have power going to it but no action. The switch seems to be ok and the outboard arms and levers have been greased. However the box hasn't been removed to check if its greased inside or bone dry. Right now there's no swiping at all with a rain-ex prepared glass. I'm hoping to have it removed this coming weekend and if its dry maybe that's all it needs. We'll see..............thanks Don. Quixrhyno
Hello friends! I got an issue with my horn but it's simply that it does not sound. When connected directly to the battery terminal it it just clicks or stumps once every time I touch the pole. It does not produce a continuous blast. What could it be? Plymouthy Adams
dirty contacts within the horn..disassemble, clean contacts....reassemble...read with meter to ensure you doing proper work......adjust for proper current draw...or tone that you prefer using the contact preload screw....
