WAs the brake light working before???  Did you do anything under the hood or under the dash before you noticed it was out?  Do you have head and tail lamps?  Does you ammeter go to neg with the engine off ad your foot on the brake?  Do you have a good ground at the brake light socket.  Is the wire to the brake lamp connected i the trunk?

A couple things to have when chasing electrical faults is a jumper wire with alligator clips on both ends.  make it from 12 gauge wire about 3 to 6 ft long.  You can use it to check grounds and also bypass suspected switches, junctions, and fuses to temporarily power a circuit or appliance.  You should invest in a simple circuit test probe.  Yes a 12 V one will work only dimmer.  These are available most places tools are sold for 5 to 30 bucks, and an electrical meter from sears or Harbor Freight is also helpful for trouble shooting faults.  By the way, how do you know the"NEW" bulb you put it worked?

Start at the beginning. Check for power at the brake light switch.

You can check to see if you have power coming to the brake light switch with a voltmeter, or a test light.

You can use the test light to see if the brake light switch actually works when you press the brake pedal.

I have an original 48 P15 and it has single filiment bulbs in the rear.  The outside lights are tail lights and the center (trunk) light is the brake light.   When I got the car the previous owner had dual filiment bulbs in the sockets.   It didn't work.

Just a thought.

It works if you change the pigtail to a double, and pick up the feed from the center brake lamp, then you have running lights onthe fenders and 3 stop lamps.
