old mopar fan Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 Well I got the battery the other day checked all the fluids all looks good. So I hook up the battery check the lights all work bit the center one on trunk lid, flip on the directionals both sides work, hit the wiper switch they work a little slow but they work and then I tried cranking it. It did crank seemed a little slow is this from the 6 volt system? I have never played with 6 volt before. Cleaned all the conections still cranked at the same speed. Then I pulled off the coil wire on the distributer to check for spark very week. What should i get for resistance across the coil? Any other words of advice will be greatly appreciated. thanks Jeff Quote
Lou Earle Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 Be sure u are using 0 or 00 battery cables not smaller Gage 12 volt. I have mine made up from welding leads at a local battery place - very good and really improves the cranking Lou Quote
greg g Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 Center lamp was originally a brake lamp. It might have been disconnected if/when the signals were added. Do the outside lamps light with the brake pedal? The dealer installed or aftermarket signal lamos work through the brake light switch, and it was easier to rig it up bypassing the center Lamp. If you want to you can find the hot side of the brake light switch, it is a hydraulic switch plumbed into the brake line near the master cylinder. You can run a wire from the hot when brakes on terminal up into the trunk and to the lamp. doing this will by pass the flasher circuit and keep it from blinking along with the signals. 6V does crank slower than 12 V and needs large cables as 6V depends on current flow rather than voltage. One of the reasons carmakers went to 12 V was to save money by utilizing smaller and cheaper and lighter wires. Quote
old mopar fan Posted May 22, 2007 Author Report Posted May 22, 2007 thanks guys the cables look like they have been changed recently i will have to check the size. Does anyone know the coil values so i can figure out if I have a bad coil or if I need to do some more connection cleaning. Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 Just a quick question, (I know I did this) Do you have the battery hooked up with a positive ground? When I had my Ford I hooked the 6v battery with neg ground and it did the same thing. Dennis Quote
claybill Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 also...when sitting for awhile even a week, it requires some pumping to get gas into the float bowl....sometimes a squirt of choke cleaner or starting fluid in the carb will quicken things up and save battery life. clyabill Quote
FMSPEED49 Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 hit the wiper switch they work a little slow but they work 6volt with electric wipers? Or a vac canister that is still holding vacuum? Quote
1just4don Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Instead of using starting fluid,,pick up your can of WD-40 and try that first. It lubes things better,,and kleans plugs at same time. Cant over spray it either, like you sure can ether,,,ever lock an engine up with that stuff?? Quote
