8SECONDSS Posted April 13, 2013 Report Posted April 13, 2013 Was reading my repair manual and it states to remove the front end of the truck to remove the engine. Is there any tricks to removing the engine without front end removal? Was looking at it and looks like the top half of the grill can be removed. Any ideas? Thanks, Greg Quote
Young Ed Posted April 13, 2013 Report Posted April 13, 2013 Yes the upper half of the grill does come off but not easily. The trucks are really designed to have the front clip pulled. There are 2 nuts under the radiator U, a few bolts at the back of each fender where they connect to the running board, 1 at the back corner of each inner fender, radiator prop rods if you have them, headlight wiring, and one end of the hood holddown. Sounds like a lot but its really not. If you don't pull the front clip you'd still have to pull the hood and prop rods plus the radiator. Quote
8SECONDSS Posted April 13, 2013 Author Report Posted April 13, 2013 Ed, so it will come out by pulling the hood, prop rods and radiator? Thanks Quote
Young Ed Posted April 13, 2013 Report Posted April 13, 2013 Ed, so it will come out by pulling the hood, prop rods and radiator? Thanks I can't say that for sure. I did mine without a front clip. I believe to not pull the front clip you'd have to get underneath and pull the trans bellhousing clutch and flywheel. The engine would have to come straight up a long ways. Quote
8SECONDSS Posted April 13, 2013 Author Report Posted April 13, 2013 I'll try it out tomorrow and let you know how it goes, Thanks for the help, Greg Quote
lugnut123 Posted April 15, 2013 Report Posted April 15, 2013 Pullin the bellhousing from under the truck mite be a nite mare. There are some bolts behind the fly wheel and there a bear to get to. Pull the front clip, drop the tranny. and then unbolt one or both of the rear moter mounts from the bell housing. the rear mount brackets are wider than the inside of the frame so they need to come off. I pulled the steering box and got it out of the way. The steer box ain't that hard. Drop the ty rod from the steerin arm then 3 bolts hold the box to the frame. You have to pull 2 floor plates in the cab floor to remove the moter with the pedals.I swung the cab off also to get it out of the way but you could do it without. noel in nm Quote
8SECONDSS Posted April 15, 2013 Author Report Posted April 15, 2013 Yesterday I pulled the front end off, which wasn't to bad unbolted the floor and pulled the trans out. Unbolted the clutch and flywheel but left the bell housing mounted in the truck. The engine came out with out a problem. When reinstalling the engine i'm going to install studs to line up the engine to bell housing. Now disassembly time and see whats the verdict. Thanks, Greg Quote
Young Ed Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 Glad you got it out. Its been a while since I messed with a truck engine so I can't recall whether or not there are dowels to align the bellhousing to the engine but you might want to check for them. Did you try and pull the engine without removing the clip? Quote
8SECONDSS Posted April 16, 2013 Author Report Posted April 16, 2013 I removed the front clip instead and it saved me alot of time. On the engine block theres two dowels. It sticks out about 5/16" but it's flat, not tapered. Thanks, Glad you got it out.
