Guest bewillie Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 When I bought my 50 bus coupe it had no serial number tag on the door post. Put an ad under parts wanted and now can't delete, change or reply to it. Not that I can't ,just haven't figured it out yet. Any way today I almost found the # that is on the title. I say almost because because the last digit is missing. The # on my title says P20249050 and the # on the frame is P20 24905. It was behind the left rear wheel right where the rear fender brace attaches to the frame. AM hoping DMV will accept this. Looks like they would have put the car serial number on the frame rather then the engine #. Thanks to the ones that contacted me about this and Tim who I called. Wish me luck with getting the right person at DMV. Billy Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 Bill...engine number and frame stamped number are all one and the same....the title reflects the original engine number..the frame is the original engine number....due to age and rust etc over the years the DMV sould more than accept what you show them..the two states I have lived in will have you fill out the paper work and have a police officer validate the numbers..then its just a matter of paying the fee...just went though this last month...I believe the SC form 400 is what you need to apply for title only as you work the vehicle.. jcmiller Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 Good luck Billy. It seems like you should have smooth sailing since you have the title. I'm surprised the state is even going to inspect the car. Here in Oregon you just mail in the title (signed over by the seller) and get a new title back in your name. There is no inspection of the vehicle. I might be trying to get a title for a vehicle without a title in the next few months, and that is going to be a lot more difficult. Here, that basically involves making the best case you can and then DMV has the discretion to issue or not issue a title. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 As Tim said......number on side of engine and on frame are the same. And is what came out on the original title. On the brown coupe I had that was damaged by the tree......somehow the vin on title had gotten changed and matched that serial number tag on the door frame. So, I just left it at that, said nothing, and the title went thru just fine. In Missouri. Of course the vin thing gets more complicated since many original motors in these old cars were replaced with either factory rebuilt units or one from another car. Usually ends up that title vin still matches the frame. A person can wire brush that frame number and maybe even use some paint to make it stand out if you think someone from the state will need to see it. Quote
Guest bewillie Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 IT turns out I cooked my own goose. I took the title in to change and didn't want tags. Didn't know but in south carolina you have to bring the car in if your not getting tags and let them make sure what your getting a title for you have. Had I been buying tags title would have been no problem. This was not explained to me at the time I applied, I was only told I had to bring the car in and when the vin tag was missing they were ready to take the car away from me while they cked to see if it were stolden. GREAT BRAINS AT WORK At least it will be right now as I will buy a serial # tag off ebay, stamp and intsall it on the pillar. Billy Quote
WatchingWolf Posted February 16, 2013 Report Posted February 16, 2013 I bought a 54 Chev 2 dr some time back along with a 4 dr parts car. The 2dr was titled to the body vin, the 4 dr. was titled to the motor vin. Along the way, someone had swapped the motors so the 2 dr had 2 titles and the 4dr had none.....What a pain in the butt!
