I have removed one leaf from each spring. That has changed the angle of the shocks so they are flatter than 90 degrees and my new shocks are not controlling the bounce. Question: Those of you who also removed a leaf, what shock worked for you? and is there any way of estimating how much stronger the shock must be per degree of change?

Which leaf did you remove?  I removed the second shortest one on each of my springs.

I'm using a set of Monroe shocks with part numbers that I found here for a stock replacement and don't have any issues.  I wonder if one of your shocks is bad?  I wouldn't think that removing one leaf would change the shock angle that much.

shocks can be many different angles, would not travel/length be your biggest concern  Less spring=more bounce perhaps, as the rear is much lighter. My shocks on 55 Fargo rear, with 80s mopar 8 1/4 diff, shock angle and even mount are different than stock. The shock travel is about right, and the ride and handling are good.

He forgot to mention he has a more modern diff, not sure how he arranged the lower shock mount for it....

I also have a more modern rear.  I used the lower shock mounts off the original PH rear and put those in the same location on the newer Jeep rear end.  I used the original frame mounts too.  So my shocks are pretty much in the same position...but maybe a bit of a different angle.

Is there a difference in the shock mounts between the years?  Mine is a 52 if that matters.

Dan adn others: I also used the same mounts. The axle mount fit perfectly. I do have used shocks on the front. Maybe that is the problem. I'm currently doing shake down drives to get it ready for DMV. I'm risking a cop pulling me over, but there is no other way.

A fuel problem surfaced yesterday, got to solve that today.

Hey Paul, id say that its most likely the shock that is bad. Removing the one leaf from the spring pack wont have that much of an effect. Good luck.
