lelshaddai Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 I am trying to repair a fuel sending unit. I have three and am making one work. I have them apart and found much junk in them. I have cleaned them up and now want to reassemble one. Any suggestions how they go back together? I see where the wire tower sits but it moves when you place the cover on. How do you get the tower to stay in place? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 As a rule, one would assemble in reverse of taking it apart..this is where you needed your camera..being new to this car as you are and if working without a manual..your camera and notes/sketches as you go are instrumental in jogging the memory when days later you try to assemble something.. in the repair manual the instrument, gauges and horn section does have a couple pictures that may be of help to you.....if you do not have the manual you really need to spring for one.. I do not have a tank here to pull the sender for a snap shot or two..most of my cars I use late model tanks and modified senders.. Quote
austinsailor Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 I have a crusty old one out of the tank, and a new one from Bernbaum not installed. I'll have to dig it out to see if the new one is just like the original, but if pictures of either would help let me know. Gene Quote
lelshaddai Posted October 19, 2012 Author Report Posted October 19, 2012 I have the manual and do take pictures. I know what goes where. I could not take a pic of this because when you take the cover off the pieces just come out. I know where the wired tower goes. I do not know how to make it stay in place when the cover is put back on. Quote
Alexander Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 On my 52, the coil tower is riveted on to the base. Sound like yours maybe snapped off which is what happened to mine. I used to epoxy to hold it in place. Quote
lelshaddai Posted October 19, 2012 Author Report Posted October 19, 2012 Does the epoxy mess with the electrical contact of the tower to the base plate? Did the epoxy hold? Is it still working? Quote
Alexander Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 I neatly glued (epoxy) the coil tower to the base. Pay close attention to the way the coil wire completes the circuit to the sending contact point. In my case I had to solder a bypass wire from the top of the tower to the contact point on the sending unit. I did this fix using jb weld epoxy about a year ago. still holding and working well. Quote
