mokid1234 Posted July 16, 2012 Report Posted July 16, 2012 I tore apart my 47 Plymouth 3 speed, needed to replace the seal and clean up the rust in the bottom of the case. I only found 9 of the roller bearings in the main shaft connection. They are in great shape, but when I put them back in there is a large gap, seems like there should be a few more in there. Does anyone know how many of the rollers there should be? The book doesn't say anything. If I need a few more, does anyone have a source? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 16, 2012 Report Posted July 16, 2012 Offhand, I do not know the exact number, but I do know that there is to be no space between them. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 16, 2012 Report Posted July 16, 2012 If you mean the main shaft pilot bearings where it fits into the front input shaft, there appears to be about 15 or 16 roller berings. Your best bet would be to scavenge them from another trans. Quote
mokid1234 Posted July 16, 2012 Author Report Posted July 16, 2012 Okay, I hang my head in shame for bothering you guys. I swear I dug around and even ran a magnet through the muck in the bottom of my parts tank and I thought I had them all. But alas after you confirmed my fears, and search of the garage, I tackled the tank again. Magnet could not get them but my sensitive fingers finally located them all. It may be time to clean out the parts washer. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 Well, good for you! but, inquiring minds want to know, how many are there? Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 Look in the yellow pages for a bearing supply. They can sell you new bearing rollers and balls too for that matter. Not expensive. I bought some loose ball bearings 5/8 in diameter and they were only $3 apiece. Small ones like you need go for under a $1 buck. They may be able to get new races if you need them. Quote
mokid1234 Posted July 17, 2012 Author Report Posted July 17, 2012 not sure, I just kept putting them in till it was full. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 No extras, I trust? Ain't it a great feeling when something goes right? Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted July 18, 2012 Report Posted July 18, 2012 14 roller bearings fit in the end of the 3 speed input shaft! Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 14 roller bearings fit in the end of the 3 speed input shaft! Once again a thumbs up to Dodgeb4ya. He always posts the correct answer. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 Don, I know the number because I too have been on my knee's looking for those missing rollers! After losing a few during a trans rebuild over the years you learn to have 14 of them on the clean white cloth on the bench ready to install into the input shaft along with the rest of the countershaft rollers! 15 of them suckers are used on the M-5 and M-6 transmissions BTW.
