Is there a way of removing the knob without breaking it? I guess it was pressed on. When new it probably had enough give to attach, but aged it may be very dry. I do not want to break it.

It screws on. I'd soak it in one of those miracle Plastic Solutions like "Back-to-Black" or Turtle wax P21. They seem to give life to dryed out plastic. Just don't hurry the job. It's one of those take as long as you can jobs. Sometimes tightening a tiny bit works better than going directly to loosening. After things get moving loosen a little tighten a little increasing in magnitude each time. Don't use a tool.

It should just screw off anti-clockwise after a good soaking Paul - although maybe it's clockwise for you guys over there as you do things different to us here in the land of Oz! Your water even swirls down the plug hole the wrong way over there doesn't it?

Does one dismantle a lot of little things down below if one pulls that shaft that runs parallel to the steering column. I'm tiring of reassembling. "If it ain't broke, I no longer try to fix it"!!!!

The gear shift handle will pop off without removing the shaft Paul. You just undo the parts that they call 'Screw' and 'Bearing' shown in the attached diagram.

If you do want to remove the shaft though, it should slide out after removing the part they call the 'Lever' at the bottom of that shaft (providing that you have enough head room inside the cab?).

Depends on the car. I don't see mention of what it is, so I'll mention that my 2 40 Dodge sedans have plastic that is molded on and can't be removed. I have no idea what other models are made that way.

in this case, it's a truck, not a car. and the truck column shift knob is threaded on.
