Talking to a guy with a sun visor I'm interested in and I find out he's selling the rest of the car too, a 50 dodge wayfarer business coupe. I'm trying to see if he'd sell the fluid drive trans separately to me if I can see if it works for my application, so, would a 50 dodge fluid drive trans bolt up to the back of a 265 long block? I wanted an automatic..this would be close enough!

I'd have to replace the rear end to fix the lack of OD if I could go this route.

The 265 has the 8 bolt crank, you will need flywheel, clutch housing, starter motor from Dodge.

Is it a semui-auto M6 4 speed trans, or a 3 speed attach to fluid coupler?

If the M6, you will need to continue to use all electrical items and the carb onto the 265.

Others will chime in, Dodgeb4ya, can certainly advise you correctly in this case...

Just because its fluid drive doesn't mean its a different trans. Could still be a basic 3spd and I'd suspect its more likely being a wayfarer business coupe.

You won't find a flywheel on a FD car. The fluid coupling replaces the flywheel. The fluid coupling unit has the starter ring gear on it

The regular clutch bolts to the fluid coupling (M-6 SemiAutomatic shown)

You'll also need the Fluid Drive bell housing:

Thanks for the much needed input gents...I greatly appreciate it!

Allpar.com shows the 50 dodge had a semi auto 4 speed, and this guy I'm talking to said he might have one but he's not sure if it's with a flywheel too. All his stuff is roughly from 50 dodges like he has....time will tell if he can find a complete one. Then we can talk money...

...funny thing here is that down the road I wanted to lower the car, by adding the 265 and then a fluid trans I think I'd be somewhat there!

The 4 speed semi-automatic is the M-6 pictured above, which will not have a flywheel but a "fluid coupling" as shown above with the starter ring gear, which is similar in looks to a torque converter.

In the case of the 1950 Dodge though, it does not multiply torque, hence the name fluid coupling.

FLUID DRIVE is really just an advertising term to refer to the fluid coupling.

The 50 Dodge May or may not have the M-6 depending on the model...the base model Dodge would have the regular 3 speed, and the "upscale" Dodge would have the M-6. If you roll back the front mat there is an inspection cover on the side of the trans hump, if you open that cover and you see the governor and solenoid, you have an M-6 semi-automatic

49 Chrysler shown but 50 Dodge floor access will be the same.
