1948PLYP15 Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 Will Champion RJ12C 592 work in the 48 flathead? Also I finally found a starter for the car but when I bench test it, it runs backwards and will not kick out the bendix? Even when I reverse polarity? 6V positive ground:confused: Quote
TodFitch Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 I've used J-11 for years in my '33. Looking at http://www.merc583.addr.com/mopar/framesets/maintframeset.html it seems that the "normal" plug would be a J-8 while a J12 would be a "hot" one. Seems like it ought to work. Be advised that a number of people on this forum have expressed reservations about Champion spark plugs. The starter should be polarity insensitive as is any DC motor that uses a field coil rather than permanent magnets for the field: The direction of rotation is dependent on the relationship of the wiring between the field coils and the armature. claybill Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 i had a similar problem with the bendix not kicking out....the starter shop said that it wouldn't..unless under pressure from the ring gear on flywheel. i was leery about that logic...but when installed it worked.! i might have the reason (pressure) not exactly his words. LAKOTA169 Posted April 14, 2012 Report Posted April 14, 2012 I just put RJ12C plugs in my car. Haven't driven it yet. I tried some Autolight R45 (?), but didn't like them. Tried to get the J11's but couldn't find them. Got the new 12's for free, so I'm not going to complain. When I had the Autolights in, twice i had a problem starting my car after driving a short distance and then parking it for a short time. When I went to start it, it just cranked over but wouldn't fire. took 2-3 minutes of cranking before it finally started. Just did short (maybe 10-15 second) cranks. After a few tries, I could start to smell gas (starting to flood). Held the pedal to the floor (not pumping) and played with the manual choke. Finally startid and didn't have any more problem starting. This happened once late last summer and once last month. Both times when the Autolights were in. Before them, I had the J11's in. Quote
