talked to the machine shop today and they are needing a few parts. I thought i could get them cheaper and save some money. The told me i will need new bearings, a complete gasket set,, ring sets. Where would be good place to start looking?

know anything im missing?

Does anyone know what a machine shop should charge for a complete rebuild supplying part? i would like to check them to see if they are being honest.

all that plus, how deep ya going go?..if you have the valve probs you say..then you may need new valves, guides, how new is the water pump (preventitive maintenance)...new oil pump as it is the heart of lubrication, cam bearings..tappets if cupped..micro-polish your cam and v-block for equal lift....while out you will want to put in the correct style freeze plug to replace the ones in there now..especially that one...also the fire could well have damaged or shortened the life of the fuel pump..pay close attention to the rubber section of the oil gauge line to ensure it has not been comprimised by the fire. Of course you also have a good opportunity to inspect and repair as needed the front isolation mount to see if it suffered any adverse effect of the flames. You have the new distributor and tune up stuff so you should be good to go there.

I needed to source rod, main and cam bearings, timing gears and chain crank seals for my recent D25 rebuild. I priced out VPW, Roberts, Bernbaum, and on Greg G's suggestion, Terrill Machine in Texas. Terrill's price was as low or lower than the others on each item, all items were in stock and the fellow there very knowledgeable. Highly recommended.
