dmulhall Posted January 27, 2012 Report Posted January 27, 2012 I'm in the process of switching engines in my b2b going from the factory 218 to a IND 251.. now, when reassembling can I use the flywheel out of my 218? it looks to be in much better condition and not as rusty..what are the parts that I can interchange between the two engines? my old engine ran great, started great, everything worked and it drove nice (until I spun 2 rod bearings)...it had new points, distributor cap, rotor, rebuilt carb, new clutch disc etc etc.. so I would like to use as many parts of my 218 as possible because of its reliability.. Thanks in advance for the help Dave Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 27, 2012 Report Posted January 27, 2012 Are both of your engines Caniadian long block (25") engines? Quote
dmulhall Posted January 27, 2012 Author Report Posted January 27, 2012 yup both canadian 25" blocks...sorry forgot to add that Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 Now where are we going to find someone who has both engines to measure and compare? Hmm wait a minute. Quote
dmulhall Posted January 28, 2012 Author Report Posted January 28, 2012 I was mostly concerned over the flywheel. Since the IND 251 will have a heavier crank and longer stroke I didn't know if there was any difference in the weight or size of the flywheel, or if there was if it would make much difference...the bell housing appears to be the same, but I thought I would float it by the "wisdom" of the forum, because I'm only 30 with limited experience Quote
1937 Dodge Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 I also converted my 25" 218 to an IND 251. While rebuilding the 251 we put in an IND 265 crank and rods. With the added HP and torque of the 265, I went with a light weight 4 bolt flywheel. Had a machinist drill out additional holes to fit the extra bolts on the 265 crank. No problems with holes lining up. I had to use a shorter starter to give me additional clearance for the full flow oil filter that bolts on the ignition side of the block. My IND block had a gear driven cam instead of chain driven. Used a cam off of a 265 crown marine block. Little more lift and duration than stock cam but still mild enough to have a smooth idle. You will definitely notice the extra cubic inches. Quote
dmulhall Posted January 30, 2012 Author Report Posted January 30, 2012 Perfect! Thanks very much, have a great night Quote
bach4660 Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 I did the conversion, and just swapped everything over. It all worked great. Quote
NiftyFifty Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 I did this exact swap this summer, and my 218 flywheel was a bit rough on the ring gear so I used my 251 plate. Just make sure you count the teeth to ensure the same number and then no messing with the starter. Deffinately a good swap, especially with a T5 swap behind it! Quote
dmulhall Posted February 7, 2012 Author Report Posted February 7, 2012 would you guys happen to have a part number for the thin belt on the 251? I'm thinking the pulleys must be the same size as the 218/230 thin belt pulleys? Thanks Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 7, 2012 Report Posted February 7, 2012 This is what I used with my alternator setup. Yours may be different. Quote
