meadowbrook Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Hi folks. I have a Borg Warner R 7 Overdrive trans in my '50 Dodge that pops out of 2nd only while coasting, never under power. I have adjusted the linkage and before I start thinking about tearing it apart to see what the issue is, I was told it could be a weak detent spring, which is easily changed from the outside of the trans. Does this sound plausible? Any insight would be appreciated. I think the actual 3 speed cluster on the OD is the same as the ones on standard 3 speed manuals in these cars, no? Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Is this the Wayfarer with a 3 speed manual with fluid drive, or the semi-auto Gyromatic? Quote
blucarsdn Posted January 22, 2012 Report Posted January 22, 2012 As a general rule... if a trans jumps out of gear on compression, ie; coasting.. the syncro's are worn out which is a signal that the trans needs rebuilding. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted January 22, 2012 Report Posted January 22, 2012 I'd try the detent spring repair first-quick and easy if it solves the problem. Stretch them a bit if you cannot find them. Springs should be the same as the regular 3 speed. A couple other other causes of this are worn shifter forks and shifter cover levers. Quote
