54Illinois Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 (edited) The motor I bought has already been painted. Let us assume the mechanic used a engine grade paint, for the heat. Can POR 20 be applied right over the paint? The manifolds are brushed clean of paint and rust, so the POR 20 is going directly onto them. Edited January 6, 2012 by 54Illinois Quote
pflaming Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 ACE HRD has a product "Jasco Prep and Prime" which is the same product as POR and at 1/4 the price. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 I would try painting over some of the current paint to see if anything happens, like bubbling or such. If all seems to hold, it will probably work OK. Quote
Frank Elder Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 What happened to por-15? Did it get reformulated? Quote
Big_John Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 POR-20 is their hi temp paint for exhaust manifolds. I don't believe it's intended as an engine enamel. http://www.por15.com/Data%20Sheets/high%20temp%20directions.pdf With any high temperature paint, it's only as good as what it's painted over. Quote

54Illinois Posted January 6, 2012 Author Report Posted January 6, 2012 Well the engine rated paints are up to 500 degrees. The heat from the motor will cure it. Putting it on only the manifold seems a waist since I am only painting one. I saw pics of Bob's motor painted with POR 20 and I like the way it looks. The big plus is the advertised durability towards the elements. I guess we will see... Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 Looking good. How a particular brand of style of engine paint performs is a very subjective matter. I had good luck with the POR product. Obviously, others have had equally good results from other brands. None of them will be totally perfect, and the engine will eventually get dingy and need to be either cleaned or repainted. So, I figure- use the one that seems best to you for whatever reason. If it doesn't do the job, you can try another brand later. Quote
54Illinois Posted January 7, 2012 Author Report Posted January 7, 2012 Has the paint on your motor cured? I have been told the blocks will not get up to 300 degrees. Quote

If your block gets up to 300 degrees, you're going to have more problems then the paint looking OK. This is really the wrong paint (Por-20) to use for your engine block. If you want to use a Por-15 product (although I don't know why) for your engine, look at their engine paint rather then their high temperature paint. IMHO, the engine paint will last much longer and look better. Use the right stuff for the job. I personally like the Dupli-Color engine paint myself, but any good high solid paint works well. Here's the last engine I did. Quote
