Well with my 318 swap as most of you know I had to eliminate my stock heater. Here in the great white north running without a heater is not an option unless you want to drive your car in July and August only. What to do???

What I was considering was a vintage aftermarket heater/defroster setup. There seem to be a lot of them on e-bay in various stages of dis-repair. Has anyone done this? It seems like a reasonable solution.

A model 31 attached to the pass side of the firewall is a good choice. There have been a lot of vintage heaters on ebay lately. Only proble is they do not provide a lot of defrosting as they recirculate the air in the car.

Yes I noticed that about the defrost. I have seen a few with defrost outlets on them. It should be pretty simple to hook those to my duct.

The old box heater is fairly easy to install and better than nothing. Will heat the car, up to a point. But does not circulate fresh air. So you need to have the vent and/or window open for ventilation.

Some have defrost ducts, some don't. You might ask around your old car friends or hit up some old car flea markets. They always seem to be available if you look around. I have 2 or 3 in the back of my garage.

What is that unit? Where on e-bay was it? It seems I was finding everything BUT that.

That one is listed as, "Heater 1932, 33, 34, 1937, 1938, 1940,"

Ford, Lincoln

I did searchs, Universal Heater,,,,,Vintage Heater,,,,,found very many...

Here is a photo on another compact, "Universal Heater". I have a AC unit

very similar to this one, that I took out of a Dodge Van.....

The heater in the pics is a Mojave heater.........made by Flex-a-lite. I have one mounted in my 50 wagon. Have it mounted on the firewall and it gets it heat from the motors coolant just like any heater.

FESTER60; I also am in the process of installing an LA318/904 combo into my 48. I've read several threads about "massaging" the firewall behind the passangers side valve cover. Will this "modification" force the replacement of the stock 48 P-15 heater???

I don't think the "massaging" is the problem. I think it's because of all the room the 318 takes up under the hood. You will also have to modify your inner fenders. I haven't done mine yet, but they clearly won't fit as is.

I've read several threads about this type of install. One of the best (I think) was one by Shadow Mt Kustomz 1950 Dodge Build Thread. He discussed "massaging" the firewall for engine clearance and modifying the fender wells. But, I did not read whether the "Massaging" of the firewall would mandate a change in heaters, ie. is there enough room between the heater and the firewall ?? I really want to use the original heater if I can. Thanks, Cass, alias littlemo...
