hutto1083 Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 I have a oil canister leaking between top lid and the fitting/bolt that holds the lid on. its a 7/8 bolt head with like a banjo fitting underneath it that the oil line. screws into. under it is a spring like it could be a pressure relief valve.could i have to much oil pressure making it leak ? The bolt and fitting do not separate or remove from the lid. any ideas ? Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 It should be possible to remove the bolt and replace the washers that seal it. Have never seen one with a banjo fitting. There should be some fiber washers or copper washers like on an oil pan drain plug. They are supposed to be changed when you change the oil filter cartridge. If they are worn or missing see if a parts store has some drain plug washers that will fit. Quote
hutto1083 Posted September 29, 2011 Author Report Posted September 29, 2011 Thanks Rusty not real sure had the top off and tried to remove the bolt The fitting seems to be part of the bolt which is hollow and screws down into the canister oil comes up threw the bolt and into the fitting and thats where the other oil line hooks to Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 Is the leak coming from the lid or the banjo fitting? I once had a by-pass filter with a banjo fitting on the top. On the one I had the banjo fitting could be removed with the nut and the nut could be removed from the banjo fitting. Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 There has to be a washer in there to seal leaks and there has to be a way to replace it. One of us should have a careful look. You are closer than I am. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 Mine has a copper washer there but I haven't had it apart . Quote
hutto1083 Posted September 30, 2011 Author Report Posted September 30, 2011 Thanks for all the info I am going to take it apart tomorrow again and study it real hard. already did this once maybe I just need to be more manly with it . On the otherside of the lid its about 2 inches long with a spring on it you can push the spring up and the nut and fitting go up away from the lid. I put the spring end in a vise and turned the nut the fitting also turns but nothing unscrews. If I end up breaking something do I just plug the holes in the block or do I need to screw the lines together to make a loop ? Quote

Somebody put it together, it didn't grow on a tree that way. Quote
busycoupe Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 My filter cannister is exactly as you describe with a large nut on top and spring fitting on the inside. It does not come apart, it is staked together on the inside. I was able to stretch a rubber washer over the nut. I believe the rubber washer came with my replacement filter element. Dave Quote
hutto1083 Posted September 30, 2011 Author Report Posted September 30, 2011 yahooo it comes apart just needed a bigger hammer no just took my time and went slow the piece that holds the spring on is just a really tight fit then you can pull the bolt and fitting off There is a copper washer on both sides of the fitting try finding that part. Had to take a drain plug gasket and open the inside up to about 7/8 but all works now. Thanks to everyones help I am sure yall will be hearing from me again. Ken Quote
