wobbly gear stick

Hi good folk..

I want to use a 4 speed gearbox but found the gearstick extremly wobbly.

Pulled it appart and found wear and tear..

Questions: can use some bronse or steel welding wire to re-shape the wear and tear ..see all the pics below

This would best be done by a shielded type arc welding like used on crankshafts to build up metal. Then it would need to be machined and heat treated. It would be an involved process. Probably easier to find another 4-speed for parts...or a new stick. Good luck.

Hard to find another one..

I thought Mig weld a beat on it..cool it of in oil and grind it to shape should work. Changing gear does not require heat..I mean it is not get as hot as an inner engine part therefore not requiring high strenght. what do you think?

I had a similar problem with a 4 speed. I mig'd the worn areas to build them up and ground them back to the original profile. The pin is removable by pushing it to the inside and use it to get the correct clearence.

with the pin you mean the screw bit ?

Easier to braze it up and file it down. Will work just as well but wear out sooner.

How many miles on it now? If the original wore out in 100,000 miles bronze might wear out in 50,000. How long do you plan on keeping it? If more than 50,000 miles might be worth buying new parts.

The pin seems to have a screw slot on the outside as if it screws in.

No, mine has a screw attached to a sort of guide..except the screw is hard to get undone..may need some heat

You mean the flux? You can clean that off with a wire brush or wet rag. The bronze is easier to weld on and easier to file to shape. It will last a long time even though it is not as hard as steel.

Did it with the mig welder..the gear stick is mild steel so easy to work with, welded a a couple of runs and all filed the grove and all done!
