Door Weatherstrip

Just a quick question.......door weatherstrip is glued onto the inner door pressing, not the actual door opening on the body.......correct?......might sound a stupid question but if there is none present on your car and you can't find another to check it against then its not a stupid question.......lol........if anyone has a pic that would be good.......this is for a 1940 Windsor Coupe........and also to confirm what I did on my 41 P11 Coupe, lol........thanks.......Andyd

Andy,

The weather strip connects to the moving part, including the trunk lid. There are some good reasons for this but, unfortunately, they all seem to elude me at the moment. Perhaps it's because by not having them set on (what seems to me to be) the logical surface you may avoid mussing your frilly smock should you stumble trying to enter the vehicle at the apex of a drunken stupor, but for whatever reason they attach to the moving part. They should seal equally well from either side or not seal at all but since any visible seams in the metal are located on the aforementioned movable edges perhaps some bored committee ensconced in a drab beige room decided there might be an aesthetic improvement by having them there.

Shall I delve into the semantics of what Yanks and Limeys call a trunk?

On my 39 Desoto the weatherstripping is not attached to the trunk lid. There is an impression , Channel, on the body that the rubber weatherstipping is glued to.

The trunk lid then compresses againt the rubber and part of the rubber seal fills the opening around the trunk lid and the rest of the body. My trunk lid is part of the entire flow of the rear of the body of the car.

If I remember correctly on the doors there also should be a channel, inwhich the rubber seal should be also glued into. The closing of the door then completes the seal against the inner door frame of the body.

Every car or year might be different but just wanted to input what on my 39 Desoto. The 39 Dodge, Chrysler and Desoto all share the same body style. The 39 Plynouth had some differneces in the trunks so I can not comment on this because i do not have the experiecne with the plymouth line.

This seems to be the case for all of the sedans, including the post war models, although the coupes apparently had the deck lid weather stripping on the lid. I cannot categorically affirm that the weather stripping is on the door for your year model, although I would suspect so.

The weather strip from what I could learn was on the door. There was a wider piece at the bottom of the door that was manufatured separately to fill the gap at the corners.

I have attached the following photos:

  • An original 1948 door bottom weather strip
  • My car with currently available weather strip wrapped around the corner
  • The edge of my door showing how I installed the weather strip on the door

As far as I know the fitted bottom piece is not available from anyone for any year/model.
