I was sure I posted this last night - I might have done it in my sleep and it never got on.

Here goes (I truly feel ignorant posting this but I know someone will share the answer with me)

I took my engine in to the machine shop. I thought I had taken everything off. When I got the engine back there were parts - all cleaned and pretty - in a box. I'm embarrassed to admit - I don't know where they go. They are called Clutch Housing Brackets (L&R). On page 60 in the parts catalog. (#6-09-11)

I looked at all the blow up pictures of the engine and I can't find where they go.

Please understand how foolish I feel.

thanks for your help

That's the one!! Thank you.

One more problem:

I bought a clutch housing dust pan - it doesn't seem to fit. 2 innocent questions: There are two holes at the rear of the engine. Is it possible to put the bolt for the motor mounts in the wrong hole? It seems like the motor is too far to the rear so the dust pan doesn't fit and the pulley is not situated right.

Also, Don, while I've got your attention: I was looking at the picture you posted with the U shaped bolts for the front motor mounts. Saw them in the parts book. I don't have them. Will regular bolts work?

I guess I should send some pictures. I notice you don't have your dust pan on. Can it be put on after the engine is in?

Remember when you were 20 and sliding under a car was fun - and easy. I got to tell you after 60 it's a little more work getting all the way down to the ground and then all the way back again.

Thanks again for the pix. I guess I'm a visual learner.

The clutch cover can be installed and removed with the engine in the car. Are you sure you have the correct clutch cover?

I dont think it is possible to install the rear engine mounts in the wrong hole.

I did not use my front engine mount U bolts as I had to drill new holes having installed a long block Desoto engine. I used grade 8 bolts. I no longer have the U bolts as I gave them to David Maxwell several years back.

I use an old furniture pad doubled up when I have to get under the car. Like you my old bones no longer like laying on cold cement.

First I can't find a 20 yr old willing to get his hands dirty. Or one that knows how to handle a wrench.

Second I am including a picture of the bracket which I finally got on. No one told me the top bolts we 9/16 and the bottom were 1/2. I guess we're supposed to figure that sort of stuff out the hard way.

Next is a picture of the bell housing. There is a hole at the very end - I'm wondering if that's the hole for rear motor mounts. There's about 1/2" difference.

Weird.

I may have mixed up the pix but you'll see.

Once again I feel most stupid.

as an old girlfriend used to say "You missed the hole."

I pushed the engine too far back. There aren't two holes I just need now to figure out how to move the engine and transmission 1/2" forward. How hard can that be?

I'm sorry to have bothered you with my incompetence. I am appreciative of all your help and patience.

Your ring gear looks pretty worn. It might be worth replacing or at the least flipping it so the good side faces the starter. I know it's work but easier now than later. Several people on the forum have flipped their ring gears and there should be some good threads on how to do it. Good luck with the engine project.
