PhilJohnson
My transmission is still clacking and clunking on my 50 Coronet. I have no idea why but I'm thinking maybe going with just a plain 3 speed would be the way to go. I have a source for old Mopar parts. I'd like to know if I can go to a standard using all factory parts. I've been searching the net high and low but haven't found much out for what I'd need to get. Young Ed
Yup. I helped Dad do that same swap into a 51 dodge(although it was a 3spd with OD) you need to either track down one with it or convert the input shaft to the longer fluid drive version. You'll need to either find shift linkage or modify some. The guy we helped had bought about 10 sets of random linkage from mopars so I can't say what the donor for that was. The M6/gyromatic was very close in length to the standard so the same driveshaft was used. An extension had to be made for the parking brake cable. I think that about covers it. If you have your stuff ready to go the swap itself should take about a day.
wayfarer
Considering the differences between the two transmissions, I think it would be easier to use all of the parts from the donor rather than a mix-n-match operation. Having the bell, flywheel, clutch and trans all from one source will make the swap alot easier. .
