My rims are in the process of being powder coated. While I'm waiting for them, I went tire shopping yesterday. What I really want are 215/85/16's. These are just a scotch over 30 inches tall, which will help with the rear drive final ratio, and of course are raidals, which ride and handle ncier.

That said, the only tires I can find in this size are all LT truck tires with a pretty hefty load range - like 10 ply rating. If I put a tire with this heavy load range on my little B1B, will these heavy duty casings offset any radial tire advantages? Might I be just as well off to use 7:50 x 16 rag casings, which cost just about half as much as radials?

What think ye, tire gurus?

Dave I'm pretty sure mine are LT tires. I'll have to double check for sure tonight. My truck rides great and steers much easier. I let someone in our plymouth club drive my truck to compare to his 41 ply with bias tires. He was impressed too. They shop did recommend 45 PSI for those tires but I thought that might assplode my rims so I run like 35-38 in mine. So far no issues after 6 years and about 2500miles.

I was going to ask the same question. I need some new tires for my 50 1 ton. I'm not really concerned about the weight anymore as it's too shiny to haul much. It has 7.5 x 16s on it now and the rims have the split ring on the front. Any ideas?

I could have a deal for you....

I took off a set of 6 ply tires from my 1/2 ton. They looked to be fairly new as the previous owner thought he had a 3/4 ton. 6 ply heavy duty tires would look good on your truck you can have them for $100, and I could delivery them to Cokato area.......

I purchased a set of LT 215/85r/16 ENDURO Rowl D for my pickup

The LT stands for light truck and the enduro means the thread type. They look good and ride good, but they are not exactly 6:00 16 because my speedometer is still off by 10mph on the light side. Shows 20 going 30 per my GPS.

The rears are 7.00 x 16 and the fronts are 6.50 x 16 tubes included

These are the sizes listed for a 3/4 ton truck these are all 6 ply heavy duty tires.

These are just a scotch over 30 inches tall.... <snip>

When doing measuring, how much is a scotch ? Does it depend on the pourer ? :D I've never seen this indication on a 'stanley' brand tape measure. Do I need an older measuring device to locate that measurement since we're talking older trucks here ?

In another life I taught vocational highschool auto mechanics in Ohio. My car pool buddy taught carpentry. For as long as he taught - many years - his students would call out measurements to the cutter guy at the saw, and say "32 inches plus two little ones and one big one. He never could get most of them to recognize or identify eighths or sixteenths of an inch - at least not out loud.

My tire "scotch" was about one eithth to three sixteenths of an inch over thirty inches, if I had to guess, and I guess I have to, in this case. Nuff sed . . .;)

On the subject of tire diameter, here's a bit of trivia you might want to copy and paste, if you will be contemplating new tires for your Pilothouse.

30 inch tires with a 4:10 ratio rear end give 2757 crankshaft rpm at 60 mph.

29 inch tires with same ratio rear give 2855 rem @ 60 mph.

28 inch diameter tires with same ratio give 2957 rpm @ 60 mph.

Sooooo, I guess you could say that one inch taller diameter equals 100 crankshaft rpm less at 60 miles per hour - give or take a scotch, Mr. Big 50.:)

Just as an FYI-I have been told by 2 tire dealers not to put radials on the lock ring style Budd rims. They both told me that a radial tire wider than a 7:50-16 bias ply would be prone to walking off the rim, and it would also need a radial tube. They suggested finding 6 holes drop center rims if I wanted to run radials. I ended up finding 2 new bias ply 16's for the front last year-still have not found any of those 6 hole drop center 16" Budd rims-I don't think they're out there. Mike
