stupid question..maybe ?

Recommended Posts

I seem to recall that some odd-ball European car had a column shifted 4-gear but using a column for a 'normal' 4-speed would leave you w/o a Reverse operation...all of assumes you are talking about something like the A-833.

Using a newer 5-speed trans (AX5, AX15, NV1500 etc) will use an 'old-timey' style shifter that looks at home in many pre-50 cars.

Quite a few of the English, and other European cars back in the late 40s early 50s had the 4 speed column shift.

It was rather a simple shift pattern, and it used the H pattern only on the column.

1st gear was towards you and up where reverse usually is in a 3 speed, 2nd was where first is same as above, 3rd where second again as above, 4th where third usually is in a 3 speed, and finally for reverse you put the shifter in the nuetral position and push foward and down.

It was a simple configuration, and it wasn't a stupid question now you know.
