Just read your thread, Rob. That car must have been well taken care of; I didn't see any rust on your frame or firewall with the clip off. That's unheard of around here. Great looking project!

Well............not quite the case insofar that there has been some restoration work done to this project before I got it. The body has been off previously and the chassis was painted etc etc etc, but it had sat for many years since without being finished. Its filthy, but I'd rather have filthy than rusty!!:D

I reassembled various pieces back onto the painted trans today. I'm happy with the result.

I also armed myself with the hose, piece of stiff wire and other poking implements and flushed out the block. What....a...clogged...up...filthy...mess!

I know that its not as clean as it could be with chemical treatments/boiling etc etc, but as I'm not completely stripping the engine down it will have to suffice. I'm sure in the knowledge however, that the engine couldn't possibly be worse off from getting rid of the crud that came out from within...:;)

Do not forget the rear frost plug, and any passage holes between head and block.

That rear frost plug area can really hold up circulation at the back of the engine if it is plugged in there.

Also and you already know this, pull that water distribution tube.

Once that is out, pop all frost plugs, rod out, and use pressure washer, and clean out as much crud as humanly possible, by flushing in every direction and opening.

I would also do the Lou Earle Electrosol treament, once the enginme is up and running again, that will further wash out anything in the block.....fred

If you can get the block down off the engine stand for a little bit, stand it on end and blast water through the open plug holes. A lot of stuff will come out the hole in the back Rockwood mentioned. When I had mine stripped down, I just set it down on the pavement and experimented with blowing water through it to see what had the most effect. I stood it on both ends and turned it every which way to let gravity help me out. I couldn't believe how long crud kept coming out of it after I was sure it was clean.

The rear freeze plug. I have what appears to be 3 'plugs' in the block to the rear. Which of these is the freeze plug?

I've flushed out mucho engine crud already, but there's always going to be more in it. I've tried briefly to tug on the distribution tube but it hasn't budged. I'm obviously going to have to talk sternly to it with a larger implement in my hand....

A question on the head - there is a heater hose connection point to the rear, but this is plugged with a screw in blank. I should take this out and flush this area also, yeah?

Rob, there are 3 plugs on the back of the block.....as you look at it, the small one on the left is the rear plug for the oil gallery that goes along the US drivers side, the centre plug, which is the largest is the rear water jacket plug and the one on the OZ drivers side or right hand side is the camshaft rear plug............good luck with the water tube..........lol.........andyd
