hi guys,

been working on a couple of r-10overdrives and just finally got one installed and checked out in my 50 4 dr.

i saw a article in rod and custom about a relay used by vw in years past that works exactly like what i needed and have seen at least 1 inquiry about a latching relay on past posts.

thought i'd pass this info along.

this relay closes connection between 1 terminal or a 2nd. when a momentary ground is put to a 3rd. terminal. it stays is one position until a ground is again applied to the 3rd. terminal.

i,ve attached a CRUDE drawing of how i've used this for overdrive wiring.

way back in junior college i took a class in drafting. at the end of session i asked the teacher about what my grade would be. he asked if i planned any further studies in drafting. i said no. so, he said that if i wasn't he would give me an "d" instead of failing me. this drawing proves why.

i'm sure others will find differant ways to use this relay and wiring possibilities.

i've installed and tried this relay setup in my 50 4 dr.

also installed a switch to put ground to relay full time if desired.

found out i like it best with cable to od in all the time with fulltime ground applied and just use switch installed in shift knob (ala pete-blueskies) to shift in or out of od at any speed or gear.

first overdive is a waste of time but 2nd. over is useful arrond town.

3rd. over changes everything when cruising. quiet and smooth

best change ever.

thought i'd post a update.

Doug,

Thanks to your tip I found on eBay a 6 volt version of the 12 volt vw relay you are using. It is part #R200 166. Like your's it is a locking relay and I intend to use it with my Shift-Rite gear shift knob switch. I will report back once it is installed.

jim,

can you post a pic of the shift-rite knob/switch ?.where to locate one?.

made my own with an old alum. knob and a n.c. mini micro switch from radio shack. i'd tried using an original nos knob but promply split it in half when drilling it out for the switch. the alum. one is smallish in diameter and would like a larger knob.

thanks for the # for a 6 volt latching relay. will pass it on the the person who now has the 2nd. od trans. i rebuilt, and add it to my parts list.

thanks,

jim,

if i can bother you once more-could you tell me if the sw. is n.o. or n.c.?

thread size of mount hole? if size is 3/8 course, i WANT one!

looks great. the n.c. or n.o. can be dealt with, another bosch relay at most.

thanks,

Doug,

The switch is n.o. Should work well with the VW locking relay.

I do not know the thread but it screwed directly onto my gear shift arm in place of the original gear shift knob. It was designed as an aftermarket accessory to be used on Chrysler products.

I see them quite often on eBay.

McMaster-Carr lists a small (4mm=0.17") push button switch that can be had in either NO or NC configuration. Only rated at 1/4 amp, so needs a relay.

jim was checking out the availability of the 6 v. relay you brought up. there is one on ebay for sale by that # now. found a couple other vw supply sellers that sell them, but were out of stock using that part #.

after some chasing i found the vw original #. 311.941.581 then i googled vw 6 volt headlight relay and found several places selling the relay in stock, including one seller that i could not find the part before. they are using the vw #.

thought i'd pass on the vw # for others that may want the relay you found.

great work jim.

Doug,

I hope to find out how mine works in a couple of weeks. Today I drove up to George Asche's place in Pennsylvania to drop off my transmission. He is going to go through it and see why it won't work for me. He hopes to be able to have it done in time to bring it with him to Chryslers at Carlisle at the end of next week. Carlisle is much closer to me than his home.

What? You are not using sniperware?

i thought ebay severely limited the use of these programs in years past, although i could not find anything on ebay about their use.

anyway, where's the fun if your not there for the KILL SHOT???
