55 Fargo Posted April 12, 2011 Report Posted April 12, 2011 Got a gift from the family yesterday, it is a 1953 Manitoba Highway map, it is in mint shape, and came form Florida of all places. I know it is not a 1947 map to match my car, but it is still in it's era. Many of the highways are gravel or oiled lot are paved but all singles lane. The 100 and 101 highways that go around Winnipeg do not exist ye, nor does the Red River Floodway (aka Duff's Ditch), that is protecting Winnipeg from flood waters at this moment. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 12, 2011 Report Posted April 12, 2011 excellent..next time you travel and get caught up in a black hole you be able to see everything you are used not existing...now if you were in Arkansas..odds are the pot holes are still in place..Nebraska is still a dirt road..state line to state line.. 55 Fargo Posted April 12, 2011 Author Report Posted April 12, 2011 (edited) On this Map Tim, the Trans Canada Hwy #1 a multi-lane highway, that stretch from east to west did not even exist then. Many of the roads, or highways on this map were still gravel or oiled gravel. My car no doubt lived it's life on a lot of gravel, if it were used in the area it was found. If it were in the City, it would have not, but may have been a lot more rusty from winter salt usage. This map, makes me see how much things have changed... Here is a modern paved highway in Manitoba 1953, notice the absence of any shoulder, this is Highway #10 going into the Town of Minnedosa. Edited April 12, 2011 by Rockwood Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 12, 2011 Report Posted April 12, 2011 don't need a map on the average for areas I have once been...the roads are pretty much in the same place, just often a poorer state of repair, over crowded and reduced speed due to additions of another few hundred driveways.. I remarked to one of the folks last time I was "back home" about how ehen we lived here years ago that the land owner did keep weeds mowed along the road and his property line and that the bordering streams were never filled with trash and limb clutter that altered the flow of water and caused erosion..his answer was, the eco minded folks will have a lawsuit on you for disturbing nautre..seems it is against the law to do this anymore..not so sure I am for progress at this rate...!!!! thrashingcows Posted April 12, 2011 Report Posted April 12, 2011 When I got my 68 Chrysler Town and Country wagon home and started rummaging through it I found a bunch of maps from the late 60's/early 70's from WA, OR, BC and AB. Very cool map though! Did they say where they found it? Quote
