Mark D Posted April 2, 2011 Report Posted April 2, 2011 Mid-day finally got around to tackling my first oil change on Ruby. Brought her down to a friends garage who let me use the lift to raise her up and have a good look on her underside. Oil change went pretty well, took exactly 4.5 qts in the crank case, and 0.5 qts in the filter. Pics attached show what I found on the underside. First picture shows that she has not had a proper oil change in a LONG time. Second show rubber deterioration at the tie rod covers. Putting this on the must do list for next replacements. Third picture shows the e-brake band, its a terrible shot, but if you where able to see the top, you'd see that theres nothing left of the shoe. Another must do on the list. Fourth picture shows that the master cylinder is fairly recent as well as the rest of the brake lines. Last seller didnt lie to me about that. Fifth shot shows the back of the transmission linkage covered in oil. Haven't done much debugging there, but thinking there's a gasket replacement in my future. But seeing as I'm gonna replace the clutch, it will have to wait for that. Quote
Mark D Posted April 2, 2011 Author Report Posted April 2, 2011 The day ended with a nice visit to the local ice cream joint. It was opening day, so it was extra tasty! Quote

I grew up about a mile away from the place, but I think I've been there more since I moved 10 miles west. Quote
randroid Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 Ruby, That's a mighty rust-scaled MC for being new, especially when seen with other parts of the undercarriage, but if it works well and doesn't leak you're getting a lot more miles on your P-15 than I am on mine. I hope the oil filter on Pigiron doesn't look quite like yours but the car hasn't run for four years and I'm planning to flush the system once it starts again. If you flush your system please tell me what you use and how you feel about the job it did. I've heard so many ways of flushing that I'm going cross eyed and would like to hear from somebody with recent experience. -Randy Quote
aero3113 Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 My48Ruby, great pic. You may want to look into changing your rear engine mounts . I have a used pair that are in great shape, $15 shipped, if you want them let me know. Quote
Al B. Bach Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 The uderside of yours looks really clean compared to mine! The previous owner of mine changed the oil and couldn't find a proper oil filter so he used one for a fork truck and made a new gasket. Unfortunately it didn't work to well because it leaks about half a quart a week. Perpetual oil change right?! I need new gaskets but I am so used to having leaky oil that I haven't gotten around to it. Quote

I don't think I will be getting around to that this year. Plan is to tear it down in the late fall and work on the engine bay. After that it will be off to the body shop for some much needed love. She needs a complete paint job as there's a few rust spots that are showing. I'll look you up if I get more time on my hands before that. Thanks for the offer. - mark Quote
