has anybody tried running their engine on ethanol? the stuff is supposed to be really hard on rubber components, but i dont think we have much of that anyways. i would think it might need different timing, maybe carb jets, etc

The E85 (85% ethanol) has fewer btu's than gasoline and therefore requires more fuel for the same energy. I've got a 09 Dodge that is flex fuel. It is dual plugged (which may be an emissions thing) but the book tells me when switching to E85 to have less than half a tank of gas. I'm guessing the computer has to recalibrate and fire the injectors longer to keep the truck running. They do mention that fuel milage will drop with e85 but with the lower cost it should be about a wash.

E85 and our flatheads? I don't know, but I'm guessing with sufficient will there is a way. My first guess is that the jets on the carb would have to be opened up quite a bit.

Our flatheads were originally designed to run on much lower quality gas. I would think that they would run OK on E85, but I'm not sure how rubber parts in the fuel system would be affected.
