Hello Folks,

I think I dodged a bullet today.

The spare tire on my 1997 Chevy S10 pickup came loose from its storage spot under the bed and fell onto the street.

Apparently the little winch assembly that holds the spare tire in place on these trucks is notorious for coming unglued (the cable assembly frays and eventually snaps). No damage to either the spare or my truck, and I was able to retrieve all of the broken parts.

But I'm thankful because it happened two blocks from my house, at 10 MPH, while negotiating a speed bump, ESPECIALLY since I travel 20 miles every day on the freeway back and forth to work.

I would hate to think what would have happened if that gizmo had let loose at 70MPH (OK, maybe 75), with four lanes of traffic behind me. Yikes.

Thank goodness for small favors.

Call a local dealer and ask if that was part of a recall program. It sounds familiar to me.

I already checked the NHTSA database - no recall for the spare tire hoist. Thanks anyway!

The same thing happened to me years ago in my 89ish S-10 work truck, except I have no idea where I lost my spare. One day I happened to look under it, and there was the frayed cable flapping in the wind. Oops, never made the news so I guess it didn't hit anybody.
