Greenbomb
That looks like it is coming along really well. I hope it all works according to plan. Don, i gotta ask: what part of that comment did you get slapped for- "bare with me", or "nice rack"?
BeBop138
BeBop138 What are the dimensions of the finished spindle? I am afraid that if I try to measure from the photo, it will not be as accurate as it should be. Thanks kai Next time to the shop I will measure center to center for you. Remember this is for the Chrysler---I don`t know if the Ply`s and Dodge`s use the same spindle...........Lee
BeBop138
Great thread...has Oppie considered marketing the bracket? I'd like R&P for my '49 if I can ever get back to work on it. He thinks not----to many variables. By looking at the pics you should get and idea how to make them----I think the placement of the rack is more important. I could have made the brackets or used Charlies. The tool for determining the place and the geometry that goes with it is beyond my pay grade. I think he told me he was within 1/16 of having it placed perfect----well within the best tolerance for bump steer. Again pic of the tool. He told me how it works and I still was lost.......Lee
BeBop138
More pics and update on the turn signal problem when you cut the old unit---the wire used to run down the shaft, now you can`t do that. He came up with a system that runs the wire part way down and comes out the side of the shaft and goes to a collar, where it plugs into a tab on a rotating brass sleeve. A threaded bung is welded on the outer shaft and this is used to thread a spring-contact button into---(this will be adjustable) it is similiar to the system used by GM in the horn ring area with a sliding spring type brass button. Yet to run power and see if it works---he assures me it will. Getting close to the whole project being finished---- I will have better pics of the whole thing when I can put it up on a hoist. BeBop138
Pics of the turn signal mods. He made all these parts from scratch---if this all works it solves the big problem of losing your horn when you change your steering shaft. He would entertain selling this set up if anyone would be interested---just pull up Oppies Hot Rods in Prior Lake Minnesota. 612-432-7888
Don Coatney
Pics of the turn signal mods. He made all these parts from scratch--- My wife is out of town so I made a cake from scratch. I will trade my made from scratch cake for your made from scratch parts.

Looks tempting, maybe if your sweetie pie had made it. Your mechanical skills are far better than your baking skills---are you working part time at Dunkin Donuts, they could use you there (?) DonaldSmith
What's the matter with that cake? It's yellow, covered with frosting, and probably tastes good.

rockable
I'm in the middle of my install right now, BeBop. I'm using a manual rack. It has 4 turns lock to lock. What is the ratio on your's? Also, I have a SB Mopar 360 V8 in my '41 Plymouth. I'm going to have to convert to a front sump, I'm pretty sure. The '41 chassis is not symmetrical and I'm going to have to build an offset box for the mount, it appears. Everything is complicated. I am using the old steering wheel---I think a little over three turns. Ya a lot of this stuff gets complicated---cut and paste when building a car. I do what I can and installing the rack with all the geometry involved--bump steer ect. I will let the pros do it. I did learn a lot from this and I still wouldn`t do it without some help from the pros. Lets face it this may be the only car I will do this to..........Good luck to you and show us your progress..............Lee

BeBop138
Questions were asked on the number of turns on the Cav rack---I used ALcardone remanufactured units---part#22-108---years used 82-93-------------2 3/4 to 3 turns lock to lock----the 22-109 is 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 lock to lock---this one I would NOT use---steering way to quick! Hope this helps........Lee
rockable
The manual rack is 4:1.
HughForrest
Limeworks Speed shop also makes a horn conversion widget like the one your buddy whipped up. http://www.limeworkspeedshop.com/index.html I used theirs when I did my R&P install. Also, there are ways of dialing back the pressure from the pump to reduce the twitchy-ness.
