41/53dodges Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 does anybody have any ideas for disguising alternators to look a little "nicer" merle saw how crappy all my little mods look, i myself HATE seeing anything out of place under the hood, especially the stupid plastic overflow tank, working on that, though. now, is there any cheap way to make the F!@#ING ALTERNATOR LOOK DECENT? this is for the truck, but the engines are similar. dezeldoc Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 They make alternators that look just like a generator, so it would still look original. Quote
Andydodge Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 Dezeldoc's right, there are a few different Alternators around now that look just like the old 30's-60-'s generators but they aren't cheap, checkout Speedway Mtrs or some of the current hot rod mags, however how about throwing some semi gloss black paint on the alternator, it would help to blend it into the other engine bolt ons like the starter, etc.......personally I'd polish or chrome it..........lol.........but I'm a hotrodder at heart......andyd Quote
hkestes41 Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 Try this thread from the HAMB http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29715 or pull out your wallet and go with a Gener-Nator http://www.gener-nator.com/index.htm Quote
dezeldoc Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 WOW, nice job. but i think our generators are a little smaller in diameter. Quote
41/53dodges Posted February 7, 2011 Author Report Posted February 7, 2011 they are ironically the exact same small size as the tiny japanese alternator i am using. 3.75" OD. nice. maybe i will just paint it, but it still wont go well, the truck is mainly the "fresh from the field" look Quote
1941Rick Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 Polished aluminum or chrome alternators look better. Just my opinion Quote

You could try an alternator out of a shipping container refrigeration unit. I think it would fit inside an old generator case. They are a small unit, a mate used one on his Vincent Rapide M/cycle. But fixing it so it doesn't spin inside could be hard. Maybe equally spaced grub screws from outside through the generator case. Roger. Quote
