austinsailor Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I need a cable for "new" overdrive. I can buy a generic cable with a small knob, but there must be a better choice. I think it should have a big knob for one thing. What are you guys using? Thanks. Quote
DJ194950 Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 ckeck out the cable at: fifthaveinternetgarage.com. looks nice. $55 seems a little pricy, but has labeled t handle that appears to correct size. a while back there was a used original priced at $95. start price and sold for that on ebay. so $55 seems ok for new. doug. happy hunting Quote
steveplym Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I bought one from O'reilly's. It was just a dorman cable with a lock out handle. It wasn't strong enough for me so I ended up ordering the one from Fifth avenue. It is very nice and works very well. Quote
Robin (UK) Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I fitted one like that in my Plymouth. It's a nice piece. Only $50 from here... http://www.alibaba.com/product/us107756064-258950443-0/Transmission_Parts_Overdrive_Selector_Cable.html Quote
austinsailor Posted February 5, 2011 Author Report Posted February 5, 2011 Thanks guys. Either one looks like it would work fine. I'll order one Monday. I'm anxious to see how it works. Quote
suntennis Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 To attach the cable requires a clamp on the transmission and a special bolt to connect the end of cable to the lever. If you do not have these parts, maybe 5th ave net garage has them. Quote
michael.warshaw Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 ive got a nice one for 40 dollars . Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 I bought a lightweight one from O'Reilly for about $20 - then was told it's too flimsy. Later got a cable from a 50 or 51 Plymouth that was heavier, but not sure it's quite long enough--does not say "overdrive" on it - may have been the hood release. Robin - did your cable come with an under dash mounting bracket? Quote
Robin (UK) Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 Robin - did your cable come with an under dash mounting bracket? No Bob, but it just needs a simple L-shaped bracket. I have it fitted on the left of the dash, above the hood pull. Quote

It has the governor, back up lockout switch (minus screws) and solenoid. Quote

hkestes41 Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 I got the cable with the "Overdrive" inscribed into the T-Handle when I bought the engine and transmission. It had an underdash bracket that looked like a mini version of an add on single gauge bracket. I took the bracket off the cable as I had an extra hole at the far left side of the switch plate with the heater controls. Popped the hole plug out put the cable in then put the T-Handle back on. steveplym Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 Here's a pic of it installed on the lower part of the dash. My cell phone pic is a little out of focus. This is an overdrive cable I had a few years ago and sold it to Young Ed before I decided to buy an od myself. It has the inscription and the L shaped bracket. Quote
