TimStatelman Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 (edited) Hey guys im a young kid here and dont have much experience when it comes to drum brakes. I currently had a bad rear wheel cylinder on my 47 which I just removed and now its time to reinstall it and re-adjust the shoes. I have the original repair guide but its really vauge and doesn't really help me. Is there a write up here or can someone type up the proper/best way to do this. Thanks Tim Edited January 31, 2011 by TimStatelman Quote

TodFitch Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 Steps 16 and 17 of this procedure: http://www.ply33.com/Repair/axle_seal Or if you don't have the tool (very likely): http://www.ply33.com/Repair/brakes Search the forum and you'll find a number of threads on brake adjustment tools including how to make several different was to make one. Niel Hoback Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 If you didn't loosen or remove the lower shoe anchor bolts, you shouldn't need to do a major adjustment. Replace the cylinder, turn the adjusting cams all the way in and put the drum on. Then do the minor adjustment procedure. Quote
TimStatelman Posted February 1, 2011 Author Report Posted February 1, 2011 Thanks everyone I just did one side and it seems that my tire spins free and then at every rotation at the same spot it gets a little hard to spin. Any ideas? Quote
TodFitch Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 Thanks everyone I just did one side and it seems that my tire spins free and then at every rotation at the same spot it gets a little hard to spin. Any ideas? Out of round drum. If its really bad and the drum has not been turned too much, then you can have a machine shop turn it for you. Quote

TimStatelman Posted February 2, 2011 Author Report Posted February 2, 2011 After installing the new wheel cylinder should I bleed the brakes then do the adjustments or do the adjustment then bleed the brakes? Quote
TodFitch Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 After installing the new wheel cylinder should I bleed the brakes then do the adjustments or do the adjustment then bleed the brakes? I'd adjust them first: The shoe adjustment affects where the pistons in the cylinder are when the brakes are off. So if you bleed them first you will, at the least, need to recheck the fluid level after adjusting. It should also be easier to bleed if you are using the old "pump the pedal" method if you don't have to move the shoes a long way before they contact the drum. Quote
