TimStatelman Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 Im looking to change out my rear in my 47 Plymouth. I have a stock set up and would just like to get a better highway speed. What would be the easiest rear and best option for what I am looking for? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 I think Don C has posted the link numerous tiimes to a list of newer mopar rears that fit with minimal re-doing. That list is probably available in the resources section of this forum. Just need to go hunting. Quote
james curl Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 The early MoPar rear ends are getting scarce and may be hard to find. You did not fill out your location on your profile so it will be hard for any of us to advice you on the location of a vendor who might have what you need. The the Home page of the Forum is a list of vendors for all things MoPar. You will find a vendor in Killeen Texas who strips old MoPars and stocks the parts for resale. He had an early Charger 3.30 rear end for sale when I installed the 90 Dakota 3.55 rear end in my 48 P-15. He was somewhat higher in price for the Charger rear end than the junk yard was for the Dakota, and I thought it might be a tad high for my driving style. Quote
TimStatelman Posted January 25, 2011 Author Report Posted January 25, 2011 I am from New Jersey I am just looking for a rear that will be somewhat of a common find such as you stated a 1990 Dakota rear seem like that would be easier to find at a local junk yard than anything from the 60's. Where the tube widths the same or did you have to fabricate a new shackle plate? Quote
falconvan Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 I"ll second that; Dakota rearends work great. I used an 87 Dakota rearend. The length was perfect; I relocated the spring mounts and used the stock springs. Also, the bolt pattern on the wheels was the same. Quote
TimStatelman Posted January 25, 2011 Author Report Posted January 25, 2011 Would something like a 87' Camaro rear work for the swap... I dont mind the lug pattern change because im also going to be ordering new wheels. Also, whats the going price for the Dakota rear I got priced for around $250...the Camaro rear for about $150 Quote
TimStatelman Posted January 26, 2011 Author Report Posted January 26, 2011 Does any company make gears I can just put into the stock rear? Quote
Alshere59 Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 I think stock gears are out of production. May find a set but at what cost? Quote
TimStatelman Posted January 26, 2011 Author Report Posted January 26, 2011 I hear you I'm just having such a hard time with finding a rear by me it's rough Quote
Robert Horne Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 I have a 95 Ford Ranger rearend, I am getting set up for my Plymouth. It is about an inch or so more narrow, but will be okay with bigger tires, and wheels. It has the same bolt pattern as my Plymouth also..... Quote

That's just a standard one legger, no posi. It had a stock 2:73 gear, I swapped it out for a 3:55. Quote
TimStatelman Posted January 28, 2011 Author Report Posted January 28, 2011 With the camaro rear what modifications did you have to do to make it fit? Quote
claybill Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 so, you have the standard 3.9 ? Quote
